The hardest part of a flooring job isn't the installation. It's standing in the store aisle trying to remember whether you need 12 boxes or 14, and knowing that one wrong guess means either a second trip across town or a stack of opened boxes you can't return. Flooring doesn't sell by the square foot. It sells by the sealed box, and you can only buy whole ones. So the question is never "how much area do I have" — it's "how many boxes do I take to the register."
This guide walks through the actual arithmetic for laminate, hardwood, and vinyl plank, including the part most people get wrong: how much extra to add for cuts and waste, and why the direction you run your planks quietly changes the answer.
The one formula that matters
Strip away the marketing and every flooring estimate is the same three steps:
- Add up the floor area of every space you're covering.
- Multiply that area by a waste factor to cover cutting and trim loss.
- Divide by how much one box covers, then round up to the next whole box.
Written out: boxes = (total area × waste factor) ÷ coverage per box, rounded up.
That's it. A 2.2 m² box covers 2.2 m² of laid floor only if you use every last millimetre — which never happens, because rooms have walls and walls need cuts. The waste factor is what bridges the gap between geometry and reality.
A few things trip people up here. The coverage number printed on the box is the laid area with zero cutting loss. It does not include any waste allowance, so you add the waste yourself, on top of your room area, before you divide. And you apply waste as a multiplier on the total area — not as "a few extra boxes" tacked on at the end. Those are two different numbers, and only the multiplier scales correctly with the size of the job.
Why 5–10% waste, and when to push higher
Here's the rule of thumb I use, and it's held up across enough jobs that I trust it:
- Straight lay, simple rectangular room: 10% waste. Planks run along the long wall, you lose a little at each end and along the perimeter, and 10% covers it comfortably.
- Diagonal or patterned lay (45°, chevron, herringbone): 15% waste. Every angled cut against the perimeter throws off an off-cut you usually can't reuse, and patterns force you to start and stop planks mid-run. The cuts add up fast.
- Genuinely simple, pre-cut product: you can drop to 5%, but only if the room is a clean rectangle and the boards are pre-sized to friendly lengths. This is the exception, not the default.
What pushes waste up, never down: long narrow rooms (more cuts per square metre), lots of doorways and thresholds, alcoves, and anything that isn't a clean box. If your room has three doorways and a bay window, lean toward the high end. Under-ordering to save 5% is how you end up mid-install, driving to a store that may have moved on to a different dye lot that will never match the floor you've already laid.
Plan around the plank direction before you buy
Direction isn't just an aesthetic choice — it feeds straight back into the box count. Run planks the long way down a room and you cut fewer ends; the waste sits near your 10% baseline. Switch to a diagonal because it looks dramatic across an open-plan space, and you've committed to perimeter cuts on every wall, which is exactly why diagonal jumps to 15%.
So decide the layout before you order, not after. If you're torn between a straight run and a 45° lay, price both: the diagonal version is usually one or two extra boxes, and seeing that as a concrete number ("the diagonal upgrade is one box") makes the decision a lot easier than arguing about vibes. The flooring type matters too — solid hardwood and engineered laminate ship in different box coverages, and vinyl plank (LVP) is different again — so always pull the per-box coverage off the actual product page rather than assuming.
A worked example: a 200 sq ft room
Let's make it concrete. Say you're flooring a single room measured at 200 sq ft, using a laminate that covers 20 sq ft per box, laid straight.
Step one, area: 200 sq ft. Step two, waste — a straight lay in a simple room, so 10%, which means a factor of 1.10. That gives 200 × 1.10 = 220 sq ft of flooring to buy. Step three, divide by box coverage: 220 ÷ 20 = 11 boxes exactly.
Eleven boxes covers 220 sq ft. Your room is 200 sq ft, so you're left with 20 sq ft of spare — one full box's worth. That leftover isn't waste; it's your repair insurance. The day a chair leg gouges a board or a leak swells a plank, you'll be grateful you have matching stock instead of hunting a discontinued batch.
Now nudge the same job to a 45° diagonal. Waste rises to 15%: 200 × 1.15 = 230 sq ft, ÷ 20 = 11.5, which rounds up to 12 boxes. One extra box buys you the diagonal look. That's the whole trade-off, in a single number.
My own near-miss
The first floor I ever laid myself, I measured the living room, got 18 m², and bought exactly that — no waste, because I figured I'd be careful. I was not careful. By the time I'd cut around the doorway, the radiator pipes, and a slightly out-of-square corner, I was a box and a half short. The store had sold through that dye lot. The replacement boards were visibly lighter, and to this day there's a strip near the window that doesn't quite match. Ten percent waste would have cost me one box up front and saved me a floor I still notice every time I walk past it. Now I never order without running the numbers first, and I always buy the spare.
Don't make these mistakes
A handful of errors account for most over- and under-buying:
- Adding waste twice. People inflate the per-box coverage "to be safe" and set a waste percentage, then over-buy by 20% or more. Enter the exact box coverage from the product page and let the waste factor do the padding once.
- Measuring wall length instead of floor area. Flooring covers the floor, not the walls. For an L-shaped or furnished room, split the floor into rectangles, add them, and use that total.
- Forgetting closets, alcoves, and thresholds. Walk the whole footprint. A 1.5 m² closet left out of the sum is one short box and a second trip to the store.
- Skimping on waste for a complex layout. Diagonal, herringbone, lots of doorways — they all generate more off-cuts. Under-ordering here is the most expensive way to save a few dollars.
