The first time I ordered gravel for a side path, I did the math on the back of a delivery slip, guessed at the weight, and ordered "about a ton." It arrived as a pile that buried half the path two inches too deep and still left the far end bare. The problem was never the geometry. It was the gap between how I measured the path — feet and inches — and how the quarry sold it: by the ton.
That gap is the whole reason this guide exists. Gravel is sold by weight, but a driveway or path is a shape with a depth. Bridging the two is a two-step calculation: figure out the volume, then turn volume into weight using the material's density. Get those two steps right and your delivery matches the hole you dug. Get them wrong and you are either making a second trip to the supplier or staring at a leftover heap.
Start With Volume: Area Times Depth
Every gravel estimate begins with one line of arithmetic:
Volume = area × depth.
Area is the footprint you want to cover. For a rectangle, that is length times width. Depth is how thick you want the layer — and this is where most people trip, because depth is measured in inches while length and width are measured in feet. You have to put them in the same unit before you multiply.
The cleanest way to do this in US units is to convert depth to feet first. Three inches is 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft. A patch that is 10 ft by 8 ft at that depth is 10 × 8 × 0.25 = 20 cubic feet. Quarries quote in cubic yards, and one cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so 20 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.74 cubic yards. How Deep Should You Lay It?
Depth drives everything downstream, so pick it before you measure anything else. Some practical numbers:
- Decorative path or top dressing: 1.5–2 in (40–50 mm). Enough to hide the ground and feel solid underfoot without rolling.
- Gravel driveway top layer: about 2 in (50 mm) of finish gravel.
- Driveway sub-base: 4–6 in (100–150 mm) of compacted crushed stone underneath the finish layer, so wheels do not sink and rut.
- Drainage trenches and soakaways: filled to the design depth of the trench, not a cosmetic number.
Deeper is not automatically better. Loose gravel laid too thick rolls and rutts under tires and feet, so a 4-inch decorative layer behaves worse than a 2-inch one over a firm base. For anything that carries weight, the depth that matters is split between a compacted sub-base and a thinner finish layer — the same layering logic you would use for a poured slab, which the concrete calculator covers if your project firms up into a hard surface later.
Turn Volume Into Tons by Density
Here is the step the delivery slip never tells you. Volume in cubic yards has to become weight in tons, and the multiplier is the material's bulk density.
As a working rule, gravel weighs roughly 1.4 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard. Where you land inside that range depends on the material:
- Crushed stone and road base: about 1.4 tons per cubic yard.
- Pea gravel and sharp sand: about 1.5.
- Ballast — a sand-and-stone mix: closer to 1.7.
To get weight, multiply volume by density: tons = cubic yards × density. If your supplier prints a number on their spec sheet, use theirs instead of the rule of thumb — and remember wet material weighs more than the dry figure, so when you are on the fence, round up rather than down.
A Worked Example: A 20 by 10 Foot Path at 3 Inches
Let me run a full path end to end so the chain is concrete.
Say you are laying a path 20 ft long by 10 ft wide with 3 inches of pea gravel.
- Area: 20 × 10 = 200 square feet.
- Depth in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
- Volume in cubic feet: 200 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet.
- Volume in cubic yards: 50 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards.
- Weight: 1.85 × 1.5 (pea gravel density) ≈ 2.8 tons.
So that ordinary-looking path needs close to three tons of gravel. If you had eyeballed it as "a ton or so" — which is exactly what I did on my first job — you would have ordered barely a third of what the path swallows. The math also shows why depth is the lever: drop the path to 2 inches and the volume falls to 1.23 cubic yards and about 1.85 tons. One inch of depth is nearly a ton of stone on a path this size.
Ordering: Bags, Bulk, and a Margin
Once you have the tonnage, ordering is mostly about format and a little about slack.
Small jobs go in bags. Garden centers sell gravel in handled bags — often around 50 lb (about 25 kg) each. For the path above at 2.8 tons, that is roughly 112 bags, which is the moment you stop bagging and call for bulk delivery instead. A path you are merely freshening with a single inch of top-up, though, is genuinely a bag job.
Bigger jobs go bulk. Bulk bags ("dumpy bags") and loose tipper loads are sold by the ton. You cannot buy a fractional ton load cleanly, so round up to whole units — and order a small margin on top. I always add roughly 5–10% for spillage, the wheelbarrow you can never fully empty, and the low spots you discover only once you start raking. Running 5% over is a leftover heap by the shed; running 5% short is a second delivery fee and a half-finished driveway.
One more ordering note for a compacted sub-base: the loose volume you order has to be larger than the finished depth, because a plate compactor settles crushed stone by about 25%. If you order the finished volume, you will be one bag short on the last pass. Add a compaction allowance before you place the order, not after you run out.
The Estimating Workflow That Actually Holds Up
Put together, the reliable sequence is: pick the depth for the job, measure the area, multiply for volume, convert to cubic yards, multiply by density for tons, then round up with a margin. Each step is a single multiplication or division, and none of them is hard — the failures all come from skipping the unit conversion or guessing the density. Do them in order and your gravel delivery lands as a layer, not a surprise. When you are quoting a client, run the numbers, copy the result, and let the figures justify the line item instead of a number pulled from the air.
