Both questions have one answer: pick a date, and the moon phase falls right out of it. The Moon runs on a clock you can read for any day, backward or forward, once you know the length of its cycle. This guide walks through how that works, what the eight phases mean, and how to put the number to use.

The 29.5-day cycle behind every phase
The Moon does not make its own light. We only ever see the half that the Sun happens to be lighting, and as the Moon orbits the Earth the slice of that lit half pointed at us grows and shrinks. One full round trip of that growing and shrinking is called the synodic month, and it averages 29.53059 days from one new moon to the next new moon. That is the single most useful number in the whole subject. Memorise "about 29.5 days" and you can already estimate roughly where the Moon is.
A calculator turns that average into an exact lookup. It takes a known new moon as an anchor, in this case the one at 2000-01-06 18:14 UTC, counts the days between that anchor and the date you ask about, and divides by 29.53059. The remainder is the moon age: how many days have passed since the most recent new moon. An age near 0 is a new moon, an age near 14.8 is a full moon, and the quarters sit around 7.4 and 22.1 days. From the moon age you can read off both the named phase and the illuminated fraction of the disc.
The eight phases, in order
Astronomers split the cycle into eight named stages. Four are "principal" phases, instants the Moon passes through; the other four are the slower stretches in between.
- New moon (dark, 0% lit). The Moon sits between us and the Sun, so its lit face points away.
- Waxing crescent (a thin, growing sliver). The first evening sliver after new moon.
- First quarter (right half lit, about 50%). One quarter of the way through the cycle.
- Waxing gibbous (more than half, still growing).
- Full moon (fully lit, 100%). Earth sits between Sun and Moon.
- Waning gibbous (more than half, now shrinking).
- Last quarter (left half lit, about 50%). Three quarters through the cycle.
- Waning crescent (a thin, shrinking sliver) before the next new moon.
Two words trip everyone up. Waxing means the lit fraction is heading toward full; waning means it is heading back toward new. And a "quarter" moon is about 50% illuminated, not 25%, because the name marks a quarter of the way through the cycle, not a quarter of the visible disc. A calculator spells out the direction next to the phase name so you never have to guess whether tonight's half-lit Moon is climbing or fading.
A worked example: a full moon and the dark night that follows
Say I am planning a Milky Way shoot and I want to know how long after a bright full moon I have to wait for a truly dark sky. I set the date to 29 July 2026. The calculator returns a moon age of roughly 14.7 days, which lands squarely on the full moon, about 99% illuminated. That is the night to shoot moonlit landscapes, not faint stars.
Now I want the next new moon. The cycle is 29.53 days long, the Moon is already 14.7 days into it, so the dark sky arrives in about 29.53 − 14.7 ≈ 14.8 days. Counting forward from 29 July lands me on roughly 13 August 2026 for the new moon. I do not have to do that subtraction by hand: the tool's principal-phases list for the month shows the new moon date directly. But knowing the arithmetic means the answer is never a mystery box. A full moon and the next new moon are always about half a cycle, two weeks, apart.
What the phase is actually good for
Once you can pull a phase for any date, it slots into a surprising number of plans.
Photography and stargazing. A new moon means a dark sky, ideal for the Milky Way and faint deep-sky objects. A full moon washes those out but floods a landscape with soft light. Read the illumination percentage for the night you are scouting and pick the one that matches the picture you want. For an astrophotography trip, the new moon weekend is the prize; for a moonlit seascape, you want the days around full.
Gardening lore and fishing. Plenty of almanacs key planting and angling to the lunar cycle, sowing leafy crops on the waxing Moon, root crops on the waning. You do not have to believe the folklore to want the data: open the tool on the day in question, see whether the Moon is waxing or waning and how full it is, and line your task up with whatever tradition you follow.
Tides. The biggest tidal ranges, spring tides, cluster around new and full moon when the Sun and Moon pull in line; the gentlest, neap tides, fall near the quarters. Knowing the phase gives you a quick read on whether a coastline will be at its most dramatic.
Settling a memory. Trying to recall whether a wedding or a strange night happened under a full moon? Type the past date in. Because the calculation is deterministic, you get the same answer every time, and the shareable link doubles as a tidy bit of evidence.
How to use it well, and where to stop trusting it
The model assumes a perfectly even 29.53059-day cycle, but the real interval wobbles by several hours each month because the Moon's orbit is elliptical and the Earth-Moon system speeds up and slows down. In practice that means a calculated phase date can be off by about a day, and the illumination by a couple of percent. For photography, gardening, captions, and casual planning that is plenty close. For an exact moonrise, moonset, or eclipse time you should still check a local almanac that models the Moon's true orbit.
