Every spring I stand in the garden-center parking lot doing the same dumb arithmetic in my head, and every spring I get it wrong by a couple of bags. Mulch is cheap until you buy 30 percent too much and it sits rotting under a tarp, or you come up short and have to make a second trip across town. The math is not hard, but it has two traps that bite almost everyone: mixing up depth units and guessing instead of measuring. This guide walks through the actual numbers so you can buy once and finish the job.

Start with area, then depth
Mulch volume is just area times depth. The only thing that makes it tricky is that area and depth live in different units. You measure a bed in feet, but you spread mulch in inches. Keep them separate in your head and the rest falls into place.
For a rectangular bed, area is length times width. A bed 8 feet long and 4 feet wide is 32 square feet. For a round bed — a ring under a tree, say — measure straight across (the diameter) and use area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². A bed 6 feet across works out to about 28 square feet. Measure the diameter, not the radius. Entering a radius where the tool wants a diameter is the single fastest way to order four times too much mulch, because the radius gets squared.
If you have several beds, get the area of each and add them up before you touch depth. A front bed, a side bed, and a tree ring are three areas summed into one total — that is the number you carry forward.
The recommended depth: 2 to 3 inches
Depth is where mulch earns its keep, and more is not better. The sweet spot for most beds is 2 to 3 inches. That is deep enough to block light from weed seeds and slow water from evaporating out of the soil, but shallow enough that air and rain still reach the roots underneath.
Two exceptions worth remembering. Right around tree trunks and plant stems, go thinner — 1 to 2 inches — and never pile mulch against bark. A mulch volcano packed against a trunk traps moisture and invites rot; it is one of the most common ways people quietly kill a young tree. The other exception runs the other way: a brand-new, weed-prone bed you are starting from scratch can take up to 4 inches to smother what is underneath. Past 4 inches you are just wasting mulch and risking suffocated roots.
So before you calculate anything, decide your depth honestly: 3 inches for a normal refresh, 4 inches to kill grass under a new border, 1 to 2 inches around delicate stems.
The cubic-yards formula
Here is the one equation to memorize. Mulch is sold by the cubic yard for bulk and by the bag (usually 2 cubic feet) for retail, and the clean conversion from square feet and inches straight to cubic yards is:
cubic yards = (area in square feet × depth in inches) ÷ 324
Where does 324 come from? A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, and there are 12 inches in a foot, so 27 × 12 = 324. That single divisor folds the unit conversion and the cubic-yard conversion into one step, so you never have to juggle cubic feet in the middle.
That divisor is also why depth deserves its own field. A 3-inch layer is 0.25 feet, not 3 feet. If you type "3" and treat it as feet while your bed dimensions are in feet, your order comes out twelve times too large. Keep depth in inches, divide by 324, done.
A worked example
Say you have a 200-square-foot bed and you want a healthy 3-inch layer. Plug it in:
cubic yards = (200 × 3) ÷ 324 = 600 ÷ 324 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards
So you need roughly 1.85 cubic yards of mulch. Now convert that to bags. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, and the US-standard bag holds 2 cubic feet, so one cubic yard is 13.5 bags. Multiply: 1.85 × 13.5 ≈ 25 bags. Because you cannot buy a fraction of a bag, round up to 25 — and if you want a small cushion for settling and under-measured edges, add 5 percent and call it 26.
If your store carries 1.5-cubic-foot bags instead, divide by 1.5 ft³: that is 18 bags per cubic yard, so about 33 bags. With 3-cubic-foot bags it is 9 per yard, so about 17. The bag size you grab changes the count a lot, which is exactly why it is worth checking the label before you load the cart.
Bags or bulk?
At 25 bags, this 200-square-foot job sits squarely in bulk territory. The rule of thumb: below about 10 to 12 bags, bagged mulch is the easy call — it is clean, you can carry it, and a couple of bags fit in any trunk. Above that crossover, a bulk scoop delivered (or hauled in a truck) almost always wins, because bagged mulch usually runs 2 to 3 times the per-yard price of bulk, and 25 bags means several car trips you would rather not make.
For our example, ordering 1.85 cubic yards of bulk — rounded to 2 yards delivered — beats wrestling 25 plastic bags home and stacking the empties for the recycling truck. The delivery fee is real, but spread across two cubic yards it is usually cheaper than the bag markup plus your gas and your Saturday afternoon. Below the crossover, the convenience of bags wins and the delivery minimum is not worth it. Run your own number and let the bag count decide.
A few habits that save a trip
Measure, do not eyeball. A bed you "remember" as 10 feet is often 13, and that is two extra bags. Stretch a tape, write the number down.
Keep a small over-order margin. Mulch settles after you spread it and bed edges are always under-measured, so buying the bare calculated minimum leaves you one bag short on the last stretch. A 5 percent cushion is enough to finish in one go without leaving a pile behind.
