Every paver project starts with the same question at the store: how many do I actually buy? Buy too few and you make a second trip across town, sometimes for a batch that no longer matches your first one. Buy way too many and you've got a stack of bricks aging in the garage. The math behind the right number is simple, and once you've seen it once you can sanity-check any quote a contractor hands you.
This guide walks through the whole count: area divided by paver size, the waste margin for cuts and breakage, the joint gaps people argue about, and the base material under the pavers that almost nobody includes in their first estimate. The core formula: area divided by one paver
A paver is a flat shape covering a flat area, so the count is just area divided by the face area of a single paver:
pavers = total area ÷ single paver area
The only trap is units. You measure a patio in feet (or metres), but the paver size is printed on the box in inches (or centimetres) — that's how the real world labels them. A 12-inch by 12-inch paver doesn't cover 12 square feet; it covers exactly 1 square foot, because there are 144 square inches in a square foot. So before you divide, convert the paver face:
paver area in square feet = (width in inches × length in inches) ÷ 144
A 6-inch by 6-inch paver works out to 36 ÷ 144 = 0.25 square foot, so it takes four of them to cover the same ground as one 12-inch paver. A standard 8-inch by 4-inch brick paver is 32 ÷ 144 ≈ 0.222 square foot. This is exactly why a small paver that looks cheaper per piece can cost more for the same patio — you need four times as many, and four times the time on your knees laying them.
Add a waste margin for cuts and breakage
Almost no real area is a tidy rectangle of whole pavers. Edges, curves, a downspout, a tree ring, a porch column — they all force diagonal and partial cuts, and the offcut is usually too small to use anywhere else. On top of that, a pallet always seems to ship with one or two cracked pieces. That's what the waste margin covers.
A good rule of thumb:
- 5% for a plain running-bond layout against straight walls, where cuts are minimal.
- 10% for a typical square or rectangular patio with a few edge cuts. This is the safe default.
- 15% for herringbone, diagonal, or basketweave patterns, where every edge piece is an angled cut and offcuts pile up fast.
To apply it, multiply your raw count by 1 plus the margin, then round up to whole pavers. A 120-paver job at 10% becomes 120 × 1.10 = 132. Round up first to whole pavers, then add waste — you never want to come up half a paver short, and you never want to order a fractional one.
A worked example: a 10×12 foot patio with 12-inch pavers
Let's run a real one. You're laying a rectangular patio, 10 feet by 12 feet, with square 12-inch by 12-inch concrete pavers in a basic grid.
- Area: 10 ft × 12 ft = 120 square feet.
- Single paver face: 12 in × 12 in = 144 square inches ÷ 144 = 1.0 square foot.
- Raw count: 120 ÷ 1.0 = 120 pavers, with no waste.
- Add 10% waste: 120 × 1.10 = 132 pavers.
So you buy 132 pavers. If the same patio used 6-inch by 6-inch pavers instead, each covering 0.25 square foot, the raw count jumps to 120 ÷ 0.25 = 480, and 480 × 1.10 = 528 pavers. Same patio, more than four times the bricks. At, say, $2.50 a paver, the 12-inch order runs 132 × $2.50 = $330 in stone, while the small pavers cost 528 × the smaller per-piece price — run both numbers before you commit, because the per-piece sticker rarely tells the whole story.
What about the joint gaps between pavers?
People ask whether the gaps between pavers throw off the count. For most jobs, deliberately ignoring them is the safer assumption. Sand-set pavers butt almost edge to edge, so counting by full face area over-orders by a hair — which is exactly the cushion you want. If you're laying with wide mortar joints, say a 3/8-inch gap, the joints do reduce the count slightly, but the 10% waste margin already absorbs that and then some. Treat the result as a buy-this-many number, not a no-spares-allowed minimum.
The one time joints matter for ordering is jointing sand or polymeric sand, which fills the gaps after the pavers are down. That's a separate bag count based on joint width and total area, not part of the paver tally.
Don't forget the base material under the pavers
Here's the line item that wrecks more first-time budgets than any miscount: the base. Pavers don't sit on bare dirt. A proper patio is built up in layers, and each one is its own order:
- Compacted gravel sub-base, typically 4 to 6 inches deep for a patio (more for a driveway that carries cars). This is the structural layer that stops heaving and settling.
- Bedding sand, about 1 inch of coarse sand the pavers actually rest on, screeded level.
- Edge restraint around the perimeter so the field doesn't spread and the outer pavers don't drift.
- Jointing sand swept into the gaps at the end.
The first time I built a patio, I had the paver count nailed and proudly loaded 132 stones — then stood there realizing I had nothing to set them on. The gravel and sand turned out to be a second, heavier trip and the bigger share of the material weight. - Round up to whole pavers, then add 5% (simple), 10% (typical), or 15% (patterned cuts).
- Order at least a few spares from the same pallet so a future repair matches.
- Budget the gravel, bedding sand, edge restraint, and jointing sand as separate line items.
