The first time someone hands you a lead sheet that just says "C" or "Am7" over the staff, the gap between that symbol and your ten fingers can feel enormous. But piano chords are not memorized one by one like vocabulary. They are built from a single repeatable rule, and once that rule clicks, you can find any triad on the keyboard without a chart in front of you.

A Triad Is a Root, a Third, and a Fifth
A triad — the most common chord in pop, folk, and classical music — is three notes: a root, a third, and a fifth. You do not pick them at random. You stack them in thirds, meaning you skip every other letter name.
Start on a root, say C. Skip D and land on E (that is the third). Skip F and land on G (that is the fifth). C-E-G. That skip-one pattern is the whole idea of stacking thirds: take a note, jump over its neighbor, take the next, jump over again, take the next. Three notes, evenly spaced by thirds, and you have a triad.
The word "third" here refers to the interval, and intervals on a piano are measured in semitones, which are the smallest steps you can take — one key to the very next key, white or black. This is where major and minor part ways.
Major vs Minor: One Key Apart
There are two flavors of third, and they are exactly one semitone apart.
A major third spans four semitones. A minor third spans three semitones. That single semitone of difference is the entire emotional gap between a bright, resolved major chord and a darker, more wistful minor chord.
Here is the rule worth memorizing: a major triad stacks a major third on the bottom and a minor third on top, while a minor triad flips it — a minor third on the bottom, a major third on top. Same root, same fifth, but the middle note slides down one key to turn major into minor.
That is why C major is C-E-G and C minor is C-Eb-G. The root (C) and the fifth (G) never move. Only the third changes: E in the major chord, E-flat in the minor chord. One black key to the left, and the whole mood inverts.
Building C Major and C Minor Note by Note
Let me build both from scratch so the semitone counting is concrete.
Start at C (a white key, just to the left of the group of two black keys). For C major, count up a major third — four semitones. C to C# is one, C# to D is two, D to D# is three, D# to E is four. You land on E. Now stack a minor third on top of E — three semitones. E to F is one, F to F# is two, F# to G is three. You land on G. C-E-G. That is C major.
Now keep the same root and rebuild for C minor. Start again at C, but this time count a minor third first — three semitones. C to C# is one, C# to D is two, D to D# is three. You land on D#, which in this chord we spell as Eb (E-flat, the same black key). Then stack a major third on top — four semitones. Eb to E is one, E to F is two, F to F# is three, F# to G is four. You land on G again. C-Eb-G. That is C minor.
Notice the symmetry: both chords are C on the bottom and G on top. The only difference is whether the middle note sits on E or one key lower on Eb. Every other major and minor triad on the keyboard follows the same logic — find the root, count four semitones (major) or three (minor) for the third, then complete the fifth.
When I started learning this, I drilled it on the worst possible chord on purpose: F# minor, with its fistful of black keys. Counting F# up a minor third lands on A, then up a major third lands on C#. F#-A-C#. After doing that by hand a few dozen times, the counting stopped feeling like arithmetic and started feeling like geography — I just knew where the third lived relative to the root. That muscle memory is the goal, and it comes faster than you would expect once the rule is the rule and not a list of facts.
Inversions: Same Notes, New Bass
A chord does not have to keep its root on the bottom. C major is C-E-G in root position, but you can voice it as E-G-C (first inversion, third on the bottom) or G-C-E (second inversion, fifth on the bottom). These are the same three pitches reshuffled, and they sound related but distinctly different because your ear hears the lowest note most strongly.
On a lead sheet, inversions show up as slash chords. C/E means a C major triad with E in the bass — first inversion. C/G means C major with G in the bass — second inversion. The notes are identical to plain C; the slash just tells you which one sits at the bottom. Inversions matter most when you want a bass line to walk smoothly from one chord to the next instead of leaping around.
Reading a Chord Diagram
A piano chord diagram is a small drawing of the keyboard with the chord tones highlighted. Read it left to right, low to high, and match each shaded key to a note name. A good diagram colors the chord tones in one shade and the bass note (for a slash chord) in another, so root position versus inversion is obvious without counting.
