How to Write a Date in Roman Numerals

A date in Roman numerals shows up in places that matter: the inside of a wedding band, the cornerstone of a town hall, the credits of a film, the underside of a forearm. The shapes look ancient and considered, which is exactly why people reach for them when a date is supposed to last. The catch is that the system has rules, and getting a rule wrong on skin or stone is expensive. This guide walks through how the numerals work, how to split a date into parts, and how to read one back when you find it carved on a building.

The seven symbols and how they stack

Roman numerals are built from seven letters, each tied to a fixed value:

  • I = 1
  • V = 5
  • X = 10
  • L = 50
  • C = 100
  • D = 500
  • M = 1000

You write a number by laying these out from largest on the left to smallest on the right and adding them up. So MMXV is 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 5 = 2015, and XXVII is 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 27. The same symbol can repeat up to three times in a row, which is how you reach numbers like XXX (30) or CCC (300).

That left-to-right, largest-first habit is the whole game most of the time. The only place it bends is the handful of subtractive pairs.

Subtractive notation: IV, IX, and friends

The Romans did not like writing four of the same letter, so instead of IIII they put a smaller symbol before a larger one to mean "subtract." When a smaller value sits to the left of a larger value, you take it away rather than add it:

  • IV = 4 (5 − 1)
  • IX = 9 (10 − 1)
  • XL = 40 (50 − 10)
  • XC = 90 (100 − 10)
  • CD = 400 (500 − 100)
  • CM = 900 (1000 − 100)

These six pairs are the only subtractive forms in standard use. You will see IIII for four on clock faces, but for a date the canonical form is IV, and a careful converter will reject IIII rather than guess what you meant. One more rule worth burning in: there is no zero. The Roman system has no symbol for it and no concept of it, so there is no year zero and no zero-padded day. The number 5 is just V, never 05. The calendar even jumps straight from 1 BC to AD 1 with nothing in between.

How a date splits into three parts

Here is the single most useful idea in this whole guide: a date is not one big number, it is three separate numbers converted independently. You convert the day, the month and the year each on their own, then join them with a separator.

Take 15 January 2024:

  • Day 15XV
  • Month 1I
  • Year 2024MMXXIV

In US month-day-year order that reads I·XV·MMXXIV. In the day-month-year order most of the world writes, the same date reads XV·I·MMXXIV. The numerals are identical; only the order of the groups changes. Because Roman numerals carry no built-in ordering, a viewer cannot tell which convention you used, so pick the order that matches where you live and stay consistent with it.

A full worked example: 25.12.2024

Let's convert Christmas Day 2024 from scratch, part by part.

Day, 25. Break it into pieces the symbols can express: 25 = 20 + 5 = XX + V = XXV.

Month, 12. That is 10 + 2 = X + II = XII.

Year, 2024. Build it from the largest pieces down: 2000 + 20 + 4 = MM + XX + IV = MMXXIV. Notice the IV at the end uses the subtractive rule instead of writing IIII.

Join them in day-month-year order and you get:

25.12.2024 → XXV·XII·MMXXIV

Read it back left to right and the groups decode cleanly: XXV is 25, XII is 12, MMXXIV is 2024. If you wrote it in US order instead, the month would lead: XII·XXV·MMXXIV. Same day, same three numerals, different sequence.

Where people actually use this

I once spent twenty minutes in a jeweller's shop helping a friend triple-check the inside of a ring before it went to the engraver. We had her anniversary as XIV·II·MMXIX, and the only thing that calmed her nerves was decoding it back to 14 February 2019 out loud, twice, before saying yes. That round trip — convert, then convert back to confirm — is the habit I trust most, because the numerals are permanent and a slipped glyph is not something you fix later.

The common uses follow the same pattern:

  • Tattoos. Wedding dates, birth dates and memorial dates go on wrists, ribs and collarbones. The mid-dot separator (II·XIV·MMXXIV) is the most popular because it reads cleanly down a limb.
  • Wedding bands and engravings. A narrow band has little room, so the slash and dot styles get tested to see which fits the engraving window.
  • Cornerstones and plaques. Old buildings carry their founding year carved in numerals, which is usually where you need to read back rather than write.
  • Monograms and copyright lines. Film credits and book colophons stamp the year alone — MMXXIV instead of 2024 — as a quiet bit of typesetting tradition.

For the year-only case, you skip the day and month entirely and just convert the year. That is the cleanest of all the forms and the one studios use at the end of a film.

Reading a Roman date back into a normal one

Decoding works in reverse. Scan each group from left to right, add values as they descend, and subtract whenever a smaller symbol sits before a larger one. MDCCC is 1000 + 500 + 100 + 100 + 100 = 1800, a year you will genuinely meet on old cornerstones. The trick with a date is knowing which group is the day and which is the month, since both are small numbers — and that depends entirely on whether the carver used month-day-year or day-month-year order.
