The first roof I ever helped order materials for finished two courses short, and the reason was embarrassingly simple: we measured the house from the ground, counted shingles off that number, and forgot that the roof itself is tilted. A sloped surface is bigger than its flat shadow. That single oversight is the most common way a roofing order comes up short, and it is completely avoidable once you understand three things: the square unit, the pitch factor, and waste.
The Unit That Trips People Up: the Roofing Square
Roofing is not sold by the square foot or the square metre the way flooring is. It is sold and quoted by the roofing square, and one square equals 100 square feet of finished roof surface. When a contractor says your roof is "about 28 squares," they mean roughly 2,800 square feet of slope to cover.
Asphalt shingles ship in bundles, and the rule of thumb is three bundles per square. So a 28-square roof needs about 84 bundles before you add any waste. Underlayment is sold differently again: a synthetic roll typically covers around 1,000 square feet, which is 10 squares, so the same roof takes roughly three rolls. The point is that every material has its own unit, and "square feet" is rarely the one you actually buy in. Get your area into squares first, then translate squares into bundles, panels, and rolls.
Why the Footprint Is Never the Real Area
Here is the concrete point that saves most jobs. The area you can pace out on the ground — length times width — is the roof's footprint, its flat projection. The actual surface you have to cover is larger because the roof rises as it runs. The steeper the pitch, the bigger that gap.
Roof pitch in the US is written as rise-over-run in twelfths: a 6/12 roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches it travels horizontally. To convert footprint to true sloped area, you multiply by the pitch factor:
factor = √(1 + (rise/run)²)
For a 6/12 roof that is √(1 + (6/12)²) = √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118. In plain terms, a flat-looking 100 m² footprint is really about 111.8 m² of roof. A flat roof has a factor of 1.0; a steep 9/12 roof has a factor of about 1.25, adding a full quarter to your area. If you skip this step you are systematically under-ordering, and the error grows with the slope.
The same pitch can be written three ways, and they all reduce to the same factor. A 6/12 roof is also 26.6 degrees and 50% grade. Whatever your drawings use, convert it once and confirm the factor looks right before you order anything.
A Worked Example, Footprint to Bundles
Let's run a real one. Say you have a simple gable house with a 12 m × 8 m footprint and a 6/12 pitch, and you are buying asphalt shingles.
- Footprint area: 12 × 8 = 96 m².
- Apply the pitch factor: 96 × 1.118 = 107.3 m² of true sloped area.
- Add 10% waste: 107.3 × 1.10 = 118 m².
- Convert to squares: 118 m² ÷ 9.29 m² per square = about 12.7 squares.
- Convert to bundles: 12.7 × 3 = 38.1, rounded up to 39 bundles.
Notice three rounding moments. You round the bundle count up, never down, because you cannot buy two-thirds of a bundle and being short is worse than having a spare. You size underlayment separately: at roughly 10 squares per roll, 12.7 squares means two rolls. And you carry the pitch factor through before waste, not after — waste is a percentage of the real sloped area, not of the flat footprint.
That is the whole chain: footprint → sloped area → plus waste → squares → bundles. Skip any link and the number at the bottom is wrong.
How Much Waste to Add
Ten percent is the sensible default, and it is the figure I start every estimate with. Waste covers the offcuts that pile up wherever shingles get trimmed — at hips, valleys, rakes, and around every chimney and vent. A plain two-plane gable with clean edges generates little waste and can sit at 8–10%. A cut-up hip roof with several valleys throws away a lot more material, and 12–15% is honest there.
Resist the temptation to set waste to zero "to save money." Zero waste is exactly how you finish one bundle short on the steepest, least accessible plane, then wait three days for a single bundle to be delivered while the deck sits exposed. A spare bundle costs less than a weather delay.
Run the Numbers Without the Mental Math
You can do every step above by hand, but the conversions between metric and imperial, the three pitch notations, and the rounding rules are exactly the kind of thing that goes wrong at a merchant's counter.
