There is a moment every content person knows. You export a graphic that looked perfect in your design tool, you upload it, and the platform quietly slices the top off your headline or stuffs your photo into a thin letterboxed strip with gray bars on either side. Nothing crashed. No error appeared. The platform just decided your aspect ratio was wrong and reframed your work for you.
The cause is almost never the resolution. It is the ratio. Each social platform crops every image and video into the shape its feed expects, and those shapes are not the same from one app to the next. If you design at the right ratio, your content fills the frame edge to edge. If you design at the wrong one, the platform crops or letterboxes it, and the parts you cared about most are usually the first to go.
This post walks through the ratio each major platform actually favors, what happens when you ignore it, and how to size a single design for two different placements without re-shooting anything.
The Ratio, Not the Pixels, Is What Gets You Cropped
A common trap is to memorize one pixel size and assume it travels. It does not. A 1080-pixel-wide image at 1:1 is a square; the same 1080 width at 9:16 is a tall vertical. The platform fits your file into a fixed window shaped by ratio, and anything outside that window gets cut.
Two failure modes show up over and over:
- Cropping. Your image is taller or wider than the window allows, so the platform trims the excess. A center-crop usually eats your top and bottom, which is exactly where titles and faces tend to live.
- Letterboxing. Your image is the wrong orientation entirely, so the platform shrinks it to fit and pads the empty space with bars. A 16:9 horizontal poster dropped into a 9:16 vertical feed becomes a small strip floating in a sea of gray.
Neither is a bug. Both are the platform doing exactly what it promised: enforcing the frame its feed is built around.
What Each Platform Actually Favors
Here is the part worth taping to your monitor. Each platform has a ratio it rewards, and they genuinely differ.
- Instagram feed: 1:1 or 4:5. The square (1080×1080) is the safe classic, but the 4:5 portrait (1080×1350) is the tallest still image Instagram allows in a feed post, so it eats more vertical space on a phone and pushes the next post further down. Try to upload anything taller and Instagram center-crops it back to 4:5. That portrait limit is a hard cap, not a suggestion.
- Instagram Stories and Reels: 9:16. Full-bleed vertical at 1080×1920. This is a separate placement from the feed, which is why the only way to get a true 9:16 image onto Instagram is as a Story or Reel, never as a feed post.
- YouTube thumbnail: 16:9 at 1280×720. Thumbnails are horizontal, full stop. Design at 1280×720 and your text and face land where the player expects them. Hand YouTube a square or a vertical and it pillarboxes the result into a small centered rectangle.
- X (Twitter): often 16:9. An in-stream photo attached directly to a post displays best at 1600×900 (16:9). Note the trap here: the summary card image X pulls from your link's
og:imagetag is a different shape, roughly 1.91:1 at 1200×628. Reuse one for the other and the in-stream version gets cropped top and bottom. - LinkedIn: horizontal, wide. The profile banner is an extreme 4:1 strip (1584×396), and shared link images run close to 1.91:1. LinkedIn is a landscape-first surface, so vertical art fights the feed instead of filling it.
The pattern underneath all of this: vertical feeds (Stories, Reels, Shorts) want 9:16, traditional feeds split between square and portrait, and video-player and professional surfaces want 16:9 or wider. Match the surface and you stop fighting the crop.
A Worked Example: One Design, Two Placements
Say you have a product announcement graphic and you want it on both the Instagram feed and an Instagram Story. Same brand, same message, two completely different frames.
For the feed post, you design at 1080×1350 (4:5). That gives you a tall, thumb-stopping portrait. Put your logo near the top, the product in the center, and the call to action with breathing room at the bottom.
For the Story, you cannot just upload that same 4:5 file. The Story frame is 9:16 (1080×1920), which is taller and narrower in proportion. If you drop the 4:5 graphic straight in, it floats in the middle with empty bands above and below, or it gets scaled up and crops your edges. Instead, you rebuild on a 1080×1920 canvas: keep the same product art centered, then use the extra vertical room for a swipe-up prompt and a sticker, and leave the top and bottom safe zones clear so the platform's own UI does not cover your text.
The math for the second side is where a calculator earns its keep. Designing for the Feed, Not Just the Canvas
When I am batching exports before a launch, the single habit that has saved me the most re-work is checking the placement before I open the design file, not after. I keep the per-platform sizes in front of me and set the canvas to the target ratio first, so the composition is built for the frame from the very first object I place. The times I have skipped that step and "fixed it later," later always meant a center-crop that ate a headline, and a frantic re-export ten minutes before a post was due.
A few rules of thumb that hold up:
- Build at the ratio, then fill the pixels. Start with the correct shape, then scale to the recommended resolution. Ratio first, resolution second.
- Respect the safe zones. Vertical feeds layer their own buttons and captions over the top and bottom of the frame. Keep critical content in the middle 80 percent.
- Do not reuse a card image as a photo. The link-preview card and the in-stream photo are different ratios on almost every platform. Make both.
There is one more step people forget: a correctly sized file can still be too heavy. A 1080×1920 export saved at maximum quality can run several megabytes, and some platforms transcode large files into mush. Once your dimensions are right, run the file through a local image compressor to shrink the byte size without touching the pixel size, so it stays sharp through the upload pipeline.
Stop Guessing, Start Matching
The whole problem comes down to a single discipline: match the ratio to the surface before you design, not after the platform crops it for you. Instagram feed wants 1:1 or 4:5, vertical placements want 9:16, YouTube thumbnails want 16:9 at 1280×720, X in-stream photos want 16:9, and LinkedIn wants wide. Get those right and your content fills the frame the way you intended, on every platform, without a single rejected upload or a headline sliced in half.
