My watch told me I walked 9.1 km one Tuesday. The same day, a friend with an identical watch logged 9.1 km too — except she is 13 cm shorter than me and we walked the exact same loop, side by side, the whole way. One of those numbers was wrong, and it took me a while to understand that the watch wasn't really measuring distance at all. It was counting steps and multiplying by a stride it had guessed. Once I measured my own stride and did the math by hand, the mystery dissolved. This post is the short version of what I learned, so you can skip the confusion.

The one formula you actually need

Distance from steps is multiplication, nothing more:

distance = steps × stride length

Stride length is how far one step carries you, measured heel-to-heel from one footfall to the next. If a step is 0.75 m and you took 8,000 steps, you covered 8,000 × 0.75 = 6,000 m, which is 6 km or about 3.73 miles. To run it the other way — distance to steps — you divide:

steps = distance ÷ stride length

Want to cover 5 km with a 0.7 m stride? That's 5,000 ÷ 0.7 ≈ 7,143 steps. The arithmetic never changes. The only variable that decides whether your answer is right or nonsense is the stride length you feed in. Get that number honest and everything downstream is honest too. Why a height-based estimate beats a fixed step

The lazy approach is to assume everyone takes a 0.762 m (30-inch) step. Fitness apps love this default because it needs zero input. It's also wrong for most people, sometimes badly. A 155 cm walker and a 190 cm walker do not have the same stride — leg length scales with height, and so does the distance each leg sweeps.

A far better estimate ties stride to height:

walking stride ≈ height × 0.415
running stride ≈ height × 0.45

For a 170 cm person, that puts the walking stride at 170 × 0.415 = 70.6 cm, roughly 0.71 m per step. The running figure is larger because when you run you push off harder and spend time airborne, so each stride covers more ground. That same 170 cm person running estimates near 0.765 m per step. Plug height in and you land within a few percent of reality, instead of inheriting a generic 30-inch step that fits almost nobody exactly. It's the difference between a guess anchored to your body and a guess anchored to no one's.

The 10,000-steps myth, with real numbers

"10,000 steps equals 8 km" gets repeated like it's a law of physics. It isn't. It's one stride length quietly baked into a round number. Here's where 10,000 steps actually lands depending on the step:

  • 0.65 m stride → 6.5 km (about 4.04 miles)
  • 0.70 m stride → 7.0 km (about 4.35 miles)
  • 0.75 m stride → 7.5 km (about 4.66 miles)
  • 0.80 m stride → 8.0 km (about 4.97 miles)

The famous 8 km figure only holds if you take a long 0.8 m step. Most people sit between 6.5 and 8 km, which is a spread of more than a kilometre. The "10,000 steps" target itself was a 1960s marketing slogan for a Japanese pedometer named manpo-kei — literally "ten-thousand-step meter" — not a clinical recommendation. So when someone quotes a flat 8 km, they're stacking one marketing number on top of another. Tie the answer to a real stride and the fog clears.

A worked example

Say your stride is exactly 0.75 m and you hit 10,000 steps. Then:

10,000 steps × 0.75 m = 7,500 m = 7.5 km ≈ 4.66 miles

Change nothing but the stride to 0.68 m and the same 10,000 steps becomes 6.8 km. The step count didn't move; the distance did. That's the whole point — distance is a property of your stride, not of the round number on your screen.

How to calibrate your own stride in two minutes

You don't have to trust the height formula. You can measure the real thing, and it's quick:

  1. Find a flat stretch and a tape measure (or a sidewalk with known panel lengths).
  2. Walk 10 natural steps — not exaggerated, your normal pace.
  3. Measure the total distance from your starting heel to your finishing heel.
  4. Divide by 10. That's your stride.

If 10 steps cover 7.3 m, your stride is 0.73 m. Do it twice for walking and twice for running (running needs a longer runway), then average each. Now you have two trustworthy numbers — one for strolls, one for jogs — instead of an app's blind default. One more practical note: convert your stride into whatever unit your tools expect before you start. If your calculator wants inches but you measured in metres, run it through a unit converter once rather than eyeballing 0.73 m as "about 29 inches" — that kind of rounding is exactly how a 6 km walk turns into a phantom 9.1 km later.

Putting it together

Here's the habit that fixed my watch problem for good. I measured my walking stride (0.78 m) and running stride (0.84 m) once. I keep both numbers in a note. When a step count matters — checking a daily goal, planning a route, sanity-checking a tracker — I run steps × stride myself instead of trusting whatever the app assumed. My 9.1 km Tuesday loop was really 7.8 km at my measured stride; the watch had been padding it with a too-long default for months.

The takeaway is small but it sticks: a step count is meaningless until you attach your own stride to it. Skip the fixed-step shortcut, anchor the estimate to your height, calibrate when you can, and treat the 10,000-steps-equals-8-km line as the loose rule of thumb it always was. Then the number on your wrist finally means what you think it means.
