Every pool clock in the world speaks the same language: time per 100. Coaches write it on the board, training logs record it, and swimmers chase it off the wall on every turn. But the number hides a few traps. A 100yd split is not a 100m split. A per-100 pace is not your time for one length. And a 25-minute swim entered as 0:25 will give you nonsense. This guide walks through how swim pace actually works, how to convert between pool lengths and units, and how to turn a pace into an interval set you can hold.
What swim pace per 100 actually means
Swim pace is the time it takes to cover 100 metres or 100 yards at a steady effort. It is not your total time, and it is not your speed in some abstract unit. It is the one figure you can compare across any distance, because it normalizes everything to the same 100-unit chunk.
The formula is short:
pace per 100 = total time / distance × 100
Time is in seconds, distance is in the same unit as your pace (metres or yards). The result is the seconds it takes to swim one hundred of those units. You then read that back as minutes and seconds, the way the pace clock shows it.
Here is a worked example. You swim 1500m in 30 minutes. Thirty minutes is 1800 seconds. Run the numbers: 1800 ÷ 1500 × 100 = 120 seconds, which is a 2:00 per 100m pace. So a 1500m swim in 30 minutes is exactly a 2:00 per 100m pace, flat. Drop the same distance to 25 minutes and the pace tightens to 1:40 per 100m. Converting between pace and finish time
Most of the time you already know your steady pace and you want a target time. Reverse the formula:
finish time = pace per 100 × (distance / 100)
At 1:40 per 100m (100 seconds), a 1500m swim is 15 hundreds, so 100 × 15 = 1500 seconds, or 25 minutes flat. Want to know what a five-second improvement buys you? Drop to 1:30 per 100 and the same 1500m falls to 22:30. That two-and-a-half-minute swing across a single race is exactly why swimmers obsess over per-100 splits instead of overall time.
You can also go the other way and back out distance when you only have a pace and a watch reading. Swim 30 minutes at 2:00 per 100m and that is 1800 seconds divided by a 120-second pace, which lands at 1500m. This is the move for open-water swims and pull sets where you never measured the course but you know how it felt.
Time per length: the split you actually watch
A per-100 pace is not the time for one pool length, and confusing the two is the most common reading error I see in swimmers' logs. One length is a fraction of 100, and which fraction depends on the pool.

In a 25m pool, 1:40 per 100 means each length should take about 25 seconds. In a 50m pool the same pace makes each length 50 seconds. That per-length number is the most useful split in swimming because you check it every single time you hit the wall. Sighting it off the pace clock at every turn is how you hold an even effort across a long set instead of fading without noticing.
The yards versus meters gap
This is where pace gets slippery. One yard is 0.9144 metres, so 100 yards is 91.44 metres, a touch under nine percent shorter than 100 metres. A 100yd time will always look faster than the same effort over 100m, simply because you swam less water.
To convert a yard pace to its metric equivalent, scale it up by the distance ratio:
pace per 100m ≈ pace per 100yd × (100 / 91.44)
A 1:30 per 100yd pace (90 seconds) works out to roughly 90 × 1.0936 = 98.4 seconds, or about 1:38 per 100m. That eight-second drift matters when you take a workout written for a 25yd pool and try to swim it in a 25m pool while travelling. If you ignore the conversion and chase your yard send-offs in a metre pool, you will swim the whole set too hard. Planning an interval set from a pace
Once you can read pace both ways, building a set is mechanical. Say the board reads "10 × 100 on 1:50" and you want ten seconds of rest. That means leaving on each interval at 1:40 per 100, because 1:50 minus 1:40 leaves ten seconds at the wall.
I tested this on my own Tuesday threshold set last month. I was guessing my send-offs and either getting two seconds of rest or twenty. Once I locked the per-100 pace at 1:40 and read my 25-second per-length split off the calculator, every wall told me whether I was on pace or drifting. The set stopped being a vibe and became a number I could hit. The difference between holding 1:40 and slipping to 1:45 over ten repeats is fifty seconds of accumulated drift, and now I catch it on rep three instead of finding out at the end.
To plan a goal-paced race set, work backwards from the target. A sub-25-minute 1500m needs 1:40 per 100; a sub-24 needs 1:36. The gap of four seconds per hundred is what your training has to close, repeat by repeat.
Quick checklist before you trust a number
- Match the unit switch to your pool first. Yards and metres differ by about eight percent, and mixing them silently corrupts the pace.
- Read the time-per-length figure for wall splits, not the per-100 pace.
- Enter a 25-minute swim as
25:00, never0:25or2500. Use the hour field only for swims over an hour.
Swim pace rewards consistency over heroics. The swimmer who holds 1:40 across every hundred beats the one who blasts the first 200 at 1:30 and fades to 1:55.
