How to Read a Tire Size Like 225/45R17 and Compare Two Tires

The string stamped on your sidewall looks like a serial number, but every digit carries a measurement. Once you can read it, you can predict whether a different tire will fit, throw off your speedometer, or quietly raise your car an inch. This guide walks through the math behind a size like 225/45R17, works a real diameter calculation, and shows what happens to the speedometer when you change sizes.

What each number in 225/45R17 means

Take 225/45R17 apart left to right:

  • 225 is the section width in millimetres — the widest tread-to-tread measurement of the tire.
  • 45 is the aspect ratio, a percentage. The sidewall height is 45% of the width, so 225 × 0.45 = 101.25 mm tall per side. The number is not 45 mm; that is the single most common misread.
  • R means radial construction, the standard for passenger tires.
  • 17 is the wheel (rim) diameter in inches — the metal, not the rubber.

So the size mixes units on purpose: width and sidewall come out in millimetres, the rim is in inches. That mix is exactly why the overall diameter needs a deliberate calculation instead of a glance.

Trucks and off-road tires sometimes use a different notation, like 33x12.5R15. There the first number is the overall diameter stated directly in inches (33), the second is the width in inches (12.5), and the sidewall is derived as (33 − 15) ÷ 2 = 9 inches per side. No aspect ratio at all. The format tells you how to read it.

Working out the overall diameter

The overall diameter is the rim plus two sidewalls — one at the top of the wheel, one at the bottom. For 225/45R17:

  1. Convert the rim to millimetres: 17 × 25.4 = 431.8 mm.
  2. Add two sidewalls: 2 × 101.25 = 202.5 mm.
  3. Total overall diameter: 431.8 + 202.5 = 634.3 mm (about 24.97 inches).

From the diameter you get everything else. The rolling circumference is π × 634.3 ≈ 1992.7 mm, so the tire travels just under 2 metres per turn. Divide one kilometre by that and the wheel spins roughly 502 revolutions per kilometre. Those revolution counts are what your speedometer and ABS actually measure — they never see "speed," only how fast the wheel turns. The tire size calculator runs all of this from the size string, including revs per mile and circumference, so you do not have to chain the steps by hand.

One trap worth naming: a wider tire is not automatically a taller one. 225/45R17 and 245/40R17 land within a millimetre or two of each other in diameter, because the wider tire pairs its extra 20 mm of width with a lower aspect ratio. When you care about the speedometer, compare overall diameter — never section width.

How a size change moves the speedometer

A speedometer counts wheel revolutions and assumes a fixed tire diameter. Change that diameter and the assumption breaks. Fit a larger tire and the wheel turns fewer times over the same road, so the needle reads low — you are going faster than it claims. Fit a smaller tire and it reads high.

Here is a concrete swap. Suppose your car came on 225/45R17 (634.3 mm) and you move to 225/50R17. The new sidewall is 225 × 0.50 = 112.5 mm, so the diameter is 431.8 + 225 = 656.8 mm. That is a +3.5% jump in diameter.

Because the speedometer was calibrated to the smaller tire, the true road speed scales by that same +3.5%:

  • Indicated 60 km/h → true 62.1 km/h
  • Indicated 100 km/h → true 103.5 km/h
  • Indicated 120 km/h → true 124.2 km/h

At highway speed you are quietly running about 4 km/h faster than the dash shows. The half-difference in diameter also raises the wheel centre — roughly (656.8 − 634.3) ÷ 2 ≈ 11 mm more ground clearance — which is why a "harmless" sidewall bump can start rubbing the fender at full steering lock.

If percentages like that feel abstract, the same +3.5% logic is what a plain percentage calculator does to any starting figure — here it just happens to be ride diameter, and the speedometer inherits the error one-for-one.

The ±3% rule and why it exists

The shop rule of thumb is to keep an overall-diameter change within ±3%. Inside that band:

  • speedometer error stays under about 3 km/h at highway speed,
  • the ABS and traction-control wheel-speed models still hold,
  • and the tire usually clears the fender and suspension.

The 225/45R17 → 225/50R17 example above (+3.5%) just crosses the line, which is the calculator's cue to flag it red. Beyond ±3% you should re-check speedometer calibration, ABS behaviour, fender clearance at full lock, and on some cars the transmission shift points. Plus-sizing a wheel — say 17-inch to 18-inch — is the disciplined version of this: drop the aspect ratio to hold the diameter near 0% change, so the rim grows while the gearing and speedometer stay honest.

A note from fitting my own set

I once swapped my winter tires onto a narrower size on a smaller rim and assumed "close enough." For a month my GPS kept showing me about 2 km/h slower than the dash, and I blamed the GPS. When I finally entered both sizes side by side, the diameter gap explained the entire drift — the speedometer was reading high because the winter tire was genuinely smaller. Five seconds of math would have saved me a month of second-guessing every speed-limit sign. Now I check the comparison before I commit to any set, summer or winter.

Reading a size, end to end

Put the pieces together and a tire size stops being a code:

  • 225 → width in mm.
  • 45 → sidewall is 45% of width = 101.25 mm.
  • 17 → rim in inches; the tire is more than 8 inches taller than that.
  • Overall diameter → 634.3 mm, circumference ≈ 1993 mm, ≈ 502 revs/km.
  • Swap to a +3.5% size → speedometer reads ~3.5% low and the car sits ~11 mm higher.

Decode your current size first so you have a reference, then compare the candidate. The numbers either reassure you or warn you before you buy four tires you cannot return.
