Price Per Unit, Not Sticker Price: How to Find the Cheaper Pack

The grocery store runs a quiet trick on almost everyone. Two bags of the same coffee sit side by side. One is $12.90, the other is $19.90. The cheaper sticker feels like the obvious win, so the smaller bag goes in the cart. But the only number that decides which pack actually costs you less is the one neither bag puts in big print: the price per unit.

Sticker price tells you what you hand the cashier today. Unit price tells you what you pay for each gram, each millilitre, or each piece of the thing you actually wanted. Those are two different questions, and shopping by the first one is how a $12.90 bag quietly costs more than a $19.90 bag.

The formula is one line

Unit price is just division:

unit price = total price / quantity

That is the whole engine. The hard part is not the arithmetic, it is making sure both options are measured against the same unit before you compare them. A price per gram and a price per litre cannot be ranked against each other, because weight and volume are different things. Weights compare to weights, volumes to volumes, counted items to counted items.

Because raw prices per gram are tiny and awkward to read ($0.0199 means nothing at a glance), it helps to scale to a friendlier basis: price per 100 g for things sold by weight, price per litre for liquids, price per piece for counted goods. The math is identical, just multiplied by a constant so the result lands at human scale.

A worked example: 500 g versus 750 g

Say a pasta sauce comes in a 500 g jar at $3.00 and a 750 g jar at $4.20. Which is cheaper per 100 g?

Reduce each to price per 100 g:

  • 500 g jar: $3.00 / 500 g = $0.006 per gram → $0.60 per 100 g
  • 750 g jar: $4.20 / 750 g = $0.0056 per gram → $0.56 per 100 g

The 750 g jar costs $1.20 more at the register, yet it is cheaper for every 100 g of sauce you take home: 56 cents against 60 cents, about a 7% saving. Here the bigger pack does win, but notice you only know that after doing the division. The sticker price pointed the other way.

Why the bigger package is not always cheaper

The instinct that "buy bigger to save" is so common that stores price against it. The family size is sometimes set higher per unit than the medium size, betting that bulk simply feels like a deal.

Flip the earlier example to see how it plays out the other way. A 200 g jar at $4.00 works out to $2.00 per 100 g. A 500 g jar at $11.00 works out to $2.20 per 100 g. The big jar costs more money and more per gram. The small jar is the smarter buy, and nothing about its size would have told you that.

So the bigger pack is a coin flip, not a rule. Sometimes it genuinely beats the small one, sometimes it is a few cents worse per unit while tying up cash and shelf space. Normalizing different sizes and units

The other place comparisons break is units. People eyeball a 500 g price next to a 1 kg price without scaling, and conclude wrongly. Or they try to weigh a 330 mL can against a 1.5 L bottle by feel. To compare honestly, both options have to sit on one scale first.

That means converting everything to a common base:

  • Weight: kilograms → grams (×1000), pounds and ounces → grams
  • Volume: litres → millilitres (×1000), gallons and fluid ounces → millilitres
  • Count: just the piece total, no conversion needed

A 1 kg bag at $19.90 becomes $1.99 per 100 g; a 500 g bag at $12.90 becomes $2.58 per 100 g. Now they are directly comparable, and the 1 kg bag wins by about 23%. How I actually use this in the aisle

I used to do this math in my head and get it wrong about a third of the time, usually because I rounded the quantity to something convenient and rounded myself into the wrong answer. Now I just enter both packs as rows on my phone, pick the units off the label, and read the per-100-g figures. The first week I did this seriously I caught a "value" mega-pack of laundry detergent that was 11% more expensive per litre than the standard bottle right next to it. It had a yellow "bulk savings" tag on the shelf. The tag was lying, and the per-unit number was the only thing in the aisle telling the truth.

A short checklist for honest comparisons

  • Compare per-unit, never per-sticker. The lower price tag is not the question.
  • Keep families separate. Weights with weights, volumes with volumes, pieces with pieces.
  • Convert before you judge. Normalize kg → g and L → mL so both options share one scale.
  • Let the lowest per-unit number win, regardless of package size or which one has the louder discount label.

Unit price is not a fancy concept. It is one division and a little unit hygiene. Do it consistently and you stop overpaying for the illusion that bigger is automatically better — sometimes it is, sometimes it is not, and the only way to know is to put both options on the same scale and read the number.
