What the ratio actually is
The waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is your waist circumference divided by your height, both measured in the same unit:
WHtR = waist ÷ height
Because both numbers carry the same unit, the unit cancels out. A waist of 80 cm over a height of 175 cm gives 80 ÷ 175 = 0.457. Measure the same person in inches — roughly 31.5 over 68.9 — and you land on the same 0.457. There is no conversion step and no unit to keep track of in the answer. That is unusual for a body metric and quietly useful: a friend reporting inches and a friend reporting centimetres can compare results directly.
The threshold most people remember is 0.5. A ratio under 0.5 means your waist is less than half your height, which lands in the healthy range for the typical adult. A worked example
Say you are 175 cm tall with an 80 cm waist. Half of 175 is 87.5 cm, so your healthy waist limit is 87.5 cm. Your actual waist of 80 cm divides out to 0.457, which sits comfortably below the 0.5 line. You have about 7 cm of room before you cross into the raised-risk band.
Now imagine the same height but a 92 cm waist. That is 92 ÷ 175 = 0.526, just over the line. The ratio tells you something the scale never could: even if your weight has not changed much, fat has accumulated where it matters most, around the middle. The fix is a concrete target rather than a vague one — drop the waist below 87.5 cm and the ratio drops back under 0.5.

Why it can beat BMI for central fat
BMI uses only weight and height. That makes it cheap to compute and genuinely useful at the population level, but it has a blind spot at the individual level: it cannot tell where your mass sits. A rugby prop and someone with a soft midsection can post an identical BMI of 27. One carries muscle; the other carries visceral fat packed around the liver, pancreas, and intestines — the fat most strongly tied to type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

The thresholds, band by band
A single 0.5 line is the headline, but a more detailed reading uses four bands, built around the widely cited Ashwell boundaries:
- Below ~0.4 — lean / below typical. Often a slim or athletic build. Worth noting, since an extremely low ratio is not automatically "better."
