How Many Rolls of Wallpaper You Actually Need (Pattern Repeat Included)

The first time I papered a wall, I trusted the number on the box. The label said one roll covered about 5.3 square metres, my wall was a touch under 11, so I bought three rolls and felt clever. I ran out halfway up the last strip. The paper had a 64 cm flower repeat, and that one detail — which the box said nothing about — quietly ate almost a whole roll. This post is the explanation I wish I'd had that afternoon.

Why "Area ÷ Coverage" Quietly Lies

The math everyone reaches for first is simple: take the wall area, divide by the area one roll covers, round up. For plain or free-match paper that is fine. For patterned paper it under-buys almost every single time.

The reason is that a roll's "coverage" number assumes you can use every centimetre of it with zero offcut. You can't. Wallpaper goes up in vertical strips, floor to ceiling, and each strip is cut from the roll as a single length. The moment your paper has a repeating design, neighbouring strips have to line up — and that alignment forces you to throw away part of every strip. Coverage figures pretend that waste doesn't exist.

So the honest way to count is the way an installer does it: cut the wall into strips, work out how long each strip really has to be, see how many strips one roll gives you, then divide. The formula that actually holds up is:

rolls = total strips needed ÷ strips one roll yields (rounded up)

where "strips one roll yields" already bakes in the pattern-repeat waste. That single shift — from area to strips — is the whole game.

Wall Area, Minus the Openings

Start with the wall, not the room. Measure each wall's width and height. Multiply for area if you like a sanity number, but what you really need is width, because width decides how many vertical strips you'll hang.

Strips needed = wall width ÷ roll width, rounded up. A 4.0 m wall papered with a 53 cm roll needs 4.0 ÷ 0.53 ≈ 7.5, so eight strips.

Now, doors and windows. The instinct is to subtract their full area, the same way you would for paint. Don't — at least not the height. The offcut you'd save above a door or below a window almost never pattern-matches a full-height strip somewhere else on the wall, so a pro counts the full strip height over an opening and only deducts its width. A door that's 0.9 m wide removes part of a strip column; a window in the middle of a wall usually removes nothing at all, because you still hang a full strip above and below it. Deduct width when an opening is tall enough to swallow a whole strip column — a patio door, a wall of glass — and leave height alone otherwise. (Paint is the opposite case, which is why a paint calculator happily subtracts full opening area.)

Roll Coverage Is About Length, Not Square Metres

Here's the trap that catches people who shop across regions. Two rolls can cover the same square metres and still need different roll counts, because strips come out of length, not area.

A standard European roll is about 53 cm wide and 10.05 m long. A US "double roll" bolt is wider but shorter — roughly 68.6 cm by 8.23 m. On paper they're close in area. But the shorter bolt yields fewer full strips per roll, so the same wall can demand an extra bolt. Always match the roll's real length, not the square-footage figure printed on the box.

To find strips per roll: roll length ÷ cut length per strip, rounded down (you can't hang a partial strip). With a 10.05 m roll and a 2.7 m wall, plain paper gives 10.05 ÷ 2.7 ≈ 3.7 → three strips per roll. Notice we already lost 0.85 m of roll there, and that's before any pattern matching.

The Pattern Repeat That Trips Everyone

This is the part the box hides. The pattern repeat is the vertical distance between two identical points in the design — say 64 cm — and it's printed on every roll's label.

To make the motif line up across strips, every strip must start at the same place in the pattern. That means each strip's cut length gets rounded up to a whole number of repeats. A 2.7 m wall with a 64 cm repeat: 270 ÷ 64 = 4.2, round up to 5 repeats = 320 cm per strip. You hang 270 cm and bin the 50 cm tail. Across eight strips that's four metres of paper in the skip — the better part of a roll.

Match type matters too. A straight match repeats at the same height on every strip. A half-drop match offsets alternate strips by half a repeat so the design steps diagonally, and that offset forces an extra half-repeat of length on each strip — half-drop wastes the most. Plain or free-match paper has a repeat of zero and no alignment waste at all, which is exactly why it always needs fewer rolls than a patterned paper of the same roll size. The rule of thumb: the bigger the repeat and the more complex the match, the harder you round up.

A Worked Example, Start to Finish

One feature wall, 4.0 m wide × 2.7 m high. Paper: 53 cm wide, 10.05 m long, 64 cm straight repeat.

  1. Strips needed. 400 ÷ 53 = 7.5 → 8 strips.
  2. Cut length per strip. Wall height 270 cm, round up to a whole 64 cm repeat: 270 ÷ 64 = 4.2 → 5 repeats → 320 cm per strip.
  3. Strips per roll. 1005 ÷ 320 = 3.14 → round down → 3 strips per roll.
  4. Rolls. 8 strips ÷ 3 per roll = 2.67 → round up → 3 rolls.

The naive area math also lands on three rolls here (10.8 m² ÷ ~5.3 ≈ 2.04 → 3), so it looks like it worked — but it had no margin. Switch that same paper to a half-drop and the cut length climbs again; strips per roll can fall to two, and suddenly you need a fourth roll. The area formula never saw it coming, because it was averaging away the exact thing — the repeat — that decides the answer. When the count is borderline, that hidden margin is the difference between a clean job and a panicked second order in a different dye lot.

Always Add One Roll, Same Batch

Whatever the calculator says, buy one extra roll from the same batch — the same dye lot, ordered at the same time. Wallpaper colour drifts between print runs, so a roll you buy three weeks later to patch a tear or a miscut rarely matches, and the mismatch shows up as a seam you can't fix without re-papering. One same-batch spare is the cheapest insurance in the whole project.
