Ask ten people how much water they should drink and nine of them will say "eight glasses." It is a clean, memorable number. It is also wrong for most bodies most of the time. Your water needs scale with how much of you there is and how hard you push that body, and a 55 kg accountant in an air-conditioned office has nothing in common, hydration-wise, with an 85 kg roofer in July.

The 30 to 35 mL Per Kilogram Rule

The number worth memorizing is simple: about 30 to 35 mL of water per kilogram of body weight per day. This is roughly the "adequate intake" reference that European (EFSA, 2010) and US (IOM, 2004) bodies landed on once they stopped quoting a flat figure and started scaling to size.

The lower end (30 mL/kg) is a sensible baseline for a sedentary day in a temperate climate. The upper end (35 mL/kg) fits someone a bit more active or on a warmer day. So far, so close to the famous eight glasses — which is exactly why the myth survives. The rule happens to be about right for a mid-sized adult on a calm day. The trouble starts the moment you change any of the inputs.

Why "Eight Glasses a Day" Is a Myth

The eight-glasses rule has a real origin and a missing footnote. It traces to a 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation of about 2.5 L (eight 8-ounce glasses) — which also said, in the very next sentence, that "most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods." That second half got lost over decades of repetition, leaving a number that quietly double-counts the water already in your meals.

It is wrong in three ways at once:

  1. It ignores body weight. Eight glasses (~1.9 L) is a fair target for a 65 kg adult and a noticeable shortfall for an 88 kg one, who needs closer to nine.
  2. It ignores food. The original advice expected food to cover a big chunk; the slogan pretends every drop must be drunk.
  3. It ignores activity and heat. A fixed number can't follow you onto a treadmill or into a heatwave.

Eight glasses isn't dangerous. It's just a one-size-fits-nobody average dressed up as a precise instruction.

Adjusting for Exercise

Exercise is where the gap between the slogan and reality gets wide. The American College of Sports Medicine puts the extra need at roughly 350 to 700 mL per hour of vigorous activity, more if you sweat heavily. In practical daily terms:

  • A 30 to 45 minute walk or yoga session: add about 350 mL.
  • A 45 to 60 minute run or gym session: add about 600 mL.
  • A 90-minute-plus heavy-sweat effort: add about 900 mL.

The most accurate trick costs nothing: weigh yourself before and after a long session. Every kilogram lost is roughly 1 litre of sweat to replace.
