What this tool does
A commission calculator built for the way comp plans actually work, not just sales × rate. Simple mode does the flat case — type a sales figure and a rate, add a base salary, and see your commission, total earnings, and the effective rate side by side. Tiered mode handles bracketed plans the way a marginal tax table does: each slice of sales is paid at the rate of the bracket it lands in, and a per-bracket breakdown shows exactly where every dollar came from. If your plan instead pays the whole sale at the top rate reached, flip to whole-amount style in one tap. Reverse mode answers the question every rep actually asks: "to take home $6,000 this month on an 8% rate with a $2,000 base, how much do I need to sell?" Every number stays in your browser, and the share link carries your sales, rate, base, and tier table so a teammate opens the exact same plan.

How Commission Calculator fits into your work
Use it for fast estimates, comparisons, and planning numbers before you make the final call.
Calculation jobs
- Getting a realistic range before a purchase, plan, workout, or schedule decision.
- Comparing scenarios by changing one input at a time.
- Turning rough assumptions into a number you can discuss.
Calculation checks
- Double-check units, dates, rates, and rounding assumptions.
- Treat health, finance, tax, and legal outputs as planning aids, not professional advice.
- Save the inputs that produced an important result so you can reproduce it later.

Real-world use cases
Settle a rep's monthly commission
Your top rep closed 60,000 this month on a tiered plan: 5% up to 10,000, 8% to 50,000, 10% above. Drop the number into tiered mode and read 4,700 with a per-bracket breakdown you can paste straight into the payroll note — no spreadsheet, no off-by-a-bracket dispute when the rep checks your math.
Design a commission plan that doesn't break the budget
You're a founder writing the first sales comp plan. Try a few bracket shapes against a realistic monthly sales figure and watch the effective rate move. If 60,000 in sales costs you a 7.8% effective payout, you can decide whether that's affordable before you put it in an offer letter, and tune the top bracket down if it isn't.
Estimate take-home before accepting a sales role
An offer says 2,000 base plus 8% commission. You think you can sell 50,000 a month. Simple mode gives 4,000 commission, 6,000 total, and a clear effective rate, so you can compare it against a salaried role honestly instead of guessing what "8% commission" actually nets you.
Reverse-solve your monthly sales quota
You need 6,000 take-home this month, your base is 2,000, and you earn 8% on sales. Reverse mode says you must sell 50,000 to get there. Now you have a concrete number to break into weekly targets instead of a vague "sell more".
Compare two competing comp offers
One offer is a flat 6% on sales; another is tiered 4/7/10. Run your expected sales volume through both and compare the commission and effective rate side by side. The flat plan may win at low volume and lose at high volume — the calculator shows you the crossover instead of leaving it to a gut feeling.
Common pitfalls
Putting base salary into the commission rate. Base is fixed pay; the rate applies only to sales. Keep them separate or a slow month shows a nonsensical effective rate.
Treating a tiered plan as whole-amount when it's actually progressive. Most plans pay each slice at its own rate, so 60k on a 5/8/10 plan is 4,700, not 6,000 — confirm the style before quoting a payout.
Forgetting that the effective rate is below your top tier. In a progressive plan early sales pay less, so your real take-home percent is always lower than the headline top rate.
Privacy
Every calculation — simple, tiered, and reverse-solve — runs as plain JavaScript inside your browser tab. No sales figure, salary, or commission number is ever sent to a server, logged, or shared with any API. The one thing to know: the shareable URL encodes your inputs (sales, rate, base, and the tier table) in the query string, so if you paste a share link somewhere, the destination's access log will record those numbers. For planning that's fine; if a figure is confidential, copy the result text instead of sharing the URL.
