  • Runs locally
  • Category Calculator
  • Best for Getting a realistic range before a purchase, plan, workout, or schedule decision.

Enter your four scores. Listening + reading get converted from raw to band using the official table; writing + speaking go in as half-bands. We average them with the IELTS rounding rule and tell you exactly how far you are from your target band.

What this tool does

Free IELTS overall band calculator with the official raw-to-band conversion tables built in. Enter your listening raw score (0–40), your reading raw score (0–40, Academic or General Training — they use different tables), your writing band, and your speaking band. We convert listening and reading to the 9-band scale using the conversion ranges published in the official Cambridge / IDP practice books, then average the four skills using the British Council's rounding rule: an average ending in .25 rounds UP to the next half band, and .75 rounds UP to the next whole band — so a 6.125 average reports as IELTS 6.0, but 6.25 reports as 6.5.

The result panel shows the four individual bands plus your overall band, and a target table that tells you exactly how many more raw points you need in listening and reading to push your overall to 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, or 8.0. You can also save the result to your browser to compare runs across mock tests — useful for seeing whether your latest Cambridge Test 19 attempt actually moved the needle. 100% client-side, nothing is uploaded, no signup.

  • Turning rough assumptions into a number you can discuss.

Calculation checks

  • Double-check units, dates, rates, and rounding assumptions.
  • Treat health, finance, tax, and legal outputs as planning aids, not professional advice.
  • Save the inputs that produced an important result so you can reproduce it later.

Real-world use cases

  • Checking if your latest mock test actually crossed band 7

You did Cambridge Test 19 and got listening 32/40, reading 30/40 Academic, writing 6.5, speaking 6.5. Plug them in and the average is 6.625, which rounds to 6.5 overall, not the 7.0 you hoped for. The target table then shows you need listening 35/40 to push the average to 6.875 and finally report 7.0. Now you know reading is fine and listening is the blocker.

  • Comparing an Academic offer against a General Training one

A university wants 6.5 overall with no skill below 6.0. You scored reading 30/40. On Academic that is band 7.0, but if your visa route needs General Training, the same 30/40 is only band 6.0. Switching the test-type toggle shows the gap instantly, so you do not walk into the exam thinking 30 correct answers guarantees the same band on both papers.

  • Working backward from a fixed visa requirement

Your skilled-migration stream needs 7.0 in every band, not just overall. You enter your current writing 6.5 and speaking 7.0, then watch the target table. It tells you listening and reading each need 34/40 Academic to reach 7.0 individually. That reframes your study plan from a vague want a higher score into two concrete raw-point targets you can drill toward.

  • A teacher building a realistic study roadmap for a class

You run a prep group and a student averages listening 28/40, reading 26/40, writing 5.5, speaking 6.0. The tool reports overall 6.0 and shows that lifting reading from 26 to 30 (band 5.5 to 6.0) plus writing to 6.0 moves overall to 6.0 staying steady but no higher. You use the target table to set each student a single weakest-skill goal instead of a generic study harder.

Common pitfalls

  • Reading an Academic raw score off the General table (or vice versa). 30/40 is band 7.0 Academic but only 6.0 General. Always set the test-type toggle first.

  • Assuming the overall rounds plain round-half-up. An average of 6.25 rounds UP to 6.5, but 6.125 rounds DOWN to 6.0. Only .25 and .75 force an upward bump.

  • Forgetting a skill floor in the requirement. Overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0 can fail even when the average is 6.5 if one skill sits at 5.5, so check each band, not just the total.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. The four scores you type and the band results never leave your device and are not uploaded anywhere. If you click Save this run, the date and bands go into your browser's localStorage only, and clearing your browser data clears the history. Your inputs are not written into the page URL, so a link you copy will not leak your scores to anyone you share the tool with.
