D Bm G A
Capo tip
Playing with a guitar capo? A capo on fret N raises every sounding chord by N semitones. So if a song is in B♭ and you want easy open shapes in G, that is +3 semitones — transpose down 3 here, then clamp the capo on fret 3 to sound the original key.
What this tool does
Free online chord and note transposer. Paste a line like C Am F G or a jazz chart like C Dm7 G7 / Em7 A7, choose how many semitones to move (or tap a target key) and read back the whole progression in the new key. It moves only the root and the slash bass note, so every suffix you wrote stays intact: Am7 becomes Bm7, Cmaj7 becomes Dmaj7, Dsus4 becomes Esus4, and C/G becomes D/A. A sharp or flat switch decides whether a black key prints as C# or Db, which matters when a singer needs the chart spelled one specific way. Bar lines, repeat marks and lyric words pass straight through untouched, so the shape of your chart survives the transpose. The built-in capo note tells you which fret to clamp to sound the original key while you play easy open shapes. Everything runs in your browser, one click copies the result, and the shareable URL reopens the exact chart and key. 100% client-side, nothing is uploaded.

Real-world use cases
Drop a song into a singer's comfortable key
A vocalist can't reach the high notes of a chart written in B. Paste the whole progression, tap G as the target key, and every chord shifts down at once while the suffixes stay put. You hand the singer a chart they can actually belt, and the band reads the new chords straight off without anyone re-writing the chart by hand.
Set up guitar capo positions fast
You want to play a piano song in Eb on guitar without barre chords. Transpose the chart down to D or C open shapes, read the capo note to see which fret restores the original pitch, and clamp it there. The tool does the semitone math so you spend rehearsal playing, not counting frets on your fingers.
Match a backing track or sample loop
A loop you bought is in F# minor but your song sits in A minor. Work out the gap, transpose your chord chart by that many semitones, and your live parts line up with the track. The shareable URL lets you send the transposed chart to a bandmate so everyone rehearses against the same key.
Rewrite a lead sheet for a transposing instrument
A trumpet reads a whole tone up from concert pitch. Take the concert chart, transpose it +2 semitones, switch to the spelling the player expects, and the part is ready. Section labels and lyrics survive the pass, so a vocal lead sheet stays readable after the harmony moves.
Teach the circle of fifths by example
In a theory lesson, show the same I-vi-IV-V in every key by stepping the transpose up one semitone at a time. Students watch C Am F G become C# A#m F# G# then D Bm G A and so on, seeing how the pattern holds while the letters rotate. Share the link so they can repeat it at home.
Common pitfalls
Reading sharps when the key wants flats. C# and Db sound identical but one looks wrong in context. In a flat key like F, flip the spelling switch to flats so Bb shows correctly instead of A#, otherwise the player second-guesses every accidental.
Forgetting the capo direction. A capo raises pitch, so to use easier shapes you transpose the chart DOWN, then the capo brings it back up. Transposing up and adding a capo stacks both shifts and lands you in the wrong key.
Typing chords the tool can't see as chords. A root must start with a letter A to G, optionally followed by a sharp or flat. Stray formatting like (C) or C-major glued together is treated as a plain word and passed through unchanged, so clean up the input to bare symbols first.
Privacy
The transpose runs entirely as plain JavaScript in your browser tab. The chord chart you paste, the key you choose and the result are never sent anywhere and nothing is logged. The one caveat: the shareable URL encodes your chart text and settings in the query string, so a share link pasted into chat will record the chords in the recipient server's access log. For an unreleased song, use the copy button and paste the text rather than sharing the URL.
