What this tool does
Free syllable counter for English words, lines and whole passages. Type a word like banana and it reads 3, cake reads 1 because the silent e drops, apple reads 2 because the ending le keeps its own beat. The tool breaks a paragraph into words, counts each one, and shows the total, the word count and the average syllables per word, so you can size a chorus, a tagline or a line of verse at a glance. Turn on haiku mode and every line is counted on its own and checked against the classic 5-7-5 pattern, with a green tick when a line lands and the gap shown when it does not. The count uses the standard vowel-group heuristic plus fixes for silent e, the le and les endings, runs of vowels that share one beat, and a small list of tricky words such as the, simile and every. It runs entirely in your browser, copies the result in one click, and the shareable link reopens your exact text and mode. No upload, no account.

Real-world use cases
Write a haiku that actually lands on 5-7-5
You want a clean haiku for a card, a caption or a class assignment. Turn on haiku mode, type your three lines, and the counter checks each one against 5-7-5 as you write. When the middle line reads 8 vs 7 you see it at once and trim a word; when all three turn green you know the form is right. No more counting beats on your fingers and losing the thread of the poem halfway through.
Trim a song lyric or rap line to fit the meter
A line that scans well has a steady syllable count. Paste a verse, read the per-word breakdown, and spot the line that runs long against the others. Swapping a three-syllable word for a one-syllable one is the quickest fix, and the running total tells you the moment the line snaps back into the groove so the phrasing sits on the beat.
Tighten a tagline or headline to a target length
Short copy is felt in syllables, not just characters. When you are choosing between two taglines, the counter tells you one is nine beats and the other six, and the shorter one almost always reads punchier out loud. Marketers use it to keep a slogan inside a breath so it lands in a radio spot or a stage read without the speaker rushing.
Teach syllables and meter in a classroom
A teacher can show the rule live: type cake and it reads 1 because the silent e drops, type apple and it reads 2 because the le keeps its beat. Students see the count change as they edit, which makes silent e and the le ending concrete instead of abstract. Share the link so the whole class opens the same words and works through them together.
Common pitfalls
Trusting the number on a rare or irregular word. The heuristic is right on about nine words in ten, but a name or an unusual word can miss. For one odd word, say it out loud and count the jaw drops yourself rather than relying on the tool.
Pasting Chinese or Japanese text and expecting English-style syllables. This counter splits on English vowel groups, so it cannot break CJK words. In Chinese, count characters instead, and Japanese haiku count on (mora), which do not map onto English syllables.
Forgetting that haiku mode counts each line separately. If you write your three lines as one wrapped paragraph, the tool sees one line, not three. Put each line of the haiku on its own row so the 5-7-5 check runs line by line.
Privacy
Every count runs as plain JavaScript inside your browser tab. The words you type, the totals and the haiku check never leave the page and nothing is logged. One thing to note: the shareable link puts your text and mode in the query string, so a link pasted into chat will record that text in the other side's server access log. For private lyrics or unpublished verse, use the copy button and paste the text rather than sharing the URL.
