What this tool does

Free tip and split-the-bill calculator for restaurants, bars, group dinners and shared rides. Enter the bill, pick a tip (15%, 18%, 20% presets or a flat amount), set how many people are splitting, and it returns the tip in money, the grand total with tip on top, and what each person owes down to the cent. Choose whether the tip percentage applies to the pre-tax subtotal (US etiquette) or the full post-tax bill, since that choice quietly shifts every share. Turn on round-up and each person's slice snaps to the next whole unit so the pooled cash always covers the bill, with the slack landing as extra tip. One-click copy and a shareable URL reproduce your exact split for the group chat. Everything runs in your browser, 100% client-side, nothing uploaded.

Real-world use cases

  • Split a restaurant check at the table

Dinner lands at 142.60 for five people and someone asks what everyone owes. Type the bill, tap 18%, set people to 5, and read the per-person line: total 168.27, about 33.65 each. Turn on round-up and it becomes 34 each, the table pools 170, the bill is covered, and the cents vanish. Share the link and nobody has to redo the math.

  • Settle a group bar tab fairly

A bar tab is 88 and the bartender expects a tip. Set the bill, choose 20%, and split among the four of you. The tool shows 105.60 total and 26.40 each, or 27 each rounded up. When the night gets loud and the arithmetic gets fuzzy, having the exact share on screen ends the "who owes what" debate before it starts.

  • Decide the tip without doing percentages in your head

You know you want to leave a good tip but blanking on 18% of 67.40 is easy after a few drinks. Punch in the bill, tap the preset, and the tip amount (12.13) appears instantly. Prefer a clean number? Switch to a flat tip and round it to 13 so the total comes to a tidy figure on the card slip.

  • Compare pre-tax and post-tax tipping

Your receipt shows the suggested tips computed on the post-tax total and it feels a touch high. Enter the bill, fill in the tax amount, and flip the pre-tax toggle to see the etiquette-correct number. On a 100 subtotal with 8 tax the pre-tax 18% tip is 18.00 versus 19.44 post-tax, so you can choose deliberately instead of by accident.

Common pitfalls

  • Forgetting that a flat tip overrides the percentage. If you type a number into the flat-tip field, the percentage and its presets stop applying. Clear that field to go back to percent-based tipping, otherwise you wonder why tapping 20% changes nothing.

  • Splitting the bill before the tip instead of after. The per-person share should come from the grand total, not the raw bill. Splitting 100 four ways gives 25 each but leaves the tip uncovered. This tool always divides the bill-plus-tip total so each share already includes its slice of the gratuity.

  • Tipping on the post-tax total without meaning to. Many receipts pre-fill suggested tips on the taxed amount, which inflates the tip by a few percent of the tax. If you want the etiquette-correct figure, enter the tax and turn on pre-tax tipping so the percentage applies to the subtotal only.

Privacy

Every number here, the tip, the total, the per-person share and the round-up, is plain JavaScript that runs inside your browser tab. No bill amount, tip or split ever leaves the page and nothing is logged. The one caveat is the shareable URL, which encodes the bill, tip percent and people count in the query string, so a link you paste into a group chat records those numbers in the recipient server's access log. For a private amount, use the copy button and paste the text rather than sharing the URL.
