My grandmother's birthday is the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. For most of my childhood that meant a yearly phone call: "So when is it this year?" Nobody could answer from memory, because the answer changes. One year it falls in mid-September, the next year in early October. The first time I actually understood why, I stopped guessing and started looking it up properly. This guide is the explanation I wish I'd had then, plus the mechanics you need to convert any date yourself.
The lunar calendar follows the moon, not the sun
The Gregorian calendar most of the world uses is a solar calendar. Its only job is to track the Earth's trip around the sun, which takes about 365.24 days. Months are administrative fictions — "September has 30 days" is a rule someone decided, not an astronomical fact.
The Chinese calendar (农历, nongli) is built differently. Every month begins on the day of a new moon, when the moon sits between the Earth and the sun and goes dark. The moon's cycle runs about 29.5 days, so each lunar month is either 29 or 30 days long. Twelve of those months add up to roughly 354 days.
That 354 is the whole story. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year. So if a lunar date — say, the first day of the first month — lined up with a Gregorian date this year, next year the same lunar date arrives roughly 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar. Let it run uncorrected for a few years and the festivals would drift backward through the seasons, until the "spring" festival landed in winter.
This is the concrete fact that explains everything else: because the lunar date is anchored to the moon, it lands on a different Gregorian date every single year.
Leap months pull the seasons back into line
Drifting 11 days a year would be a disaster, so the calendar corrects itself by inserting a whole extra month — a leap month (闰月) — roughly every three years. Three lunar years lose about 33 days against the sun; one extra 29- or 30-day month puts most of that back.
The rule for where to insert it is precise, not arbitrary. It comes from the Shixian calendar adopted in 1645. The solar year is divided into 24 solar terms (节气); twelve of them are "principal terms" (中气), spaced roughly a month apart. In a lunar year that contains 13 new moons between two winter solstices, the leap month is placed after the first month that does not contain a principal term. Over 19 years this works out to exactly 7 leap months — the same 19-year cycle the Greeks called the Metonic cycle.
A leap month takes the number of the month it follows. So 闰四月 is "the leap fourth month" — a second fourth month inserted right after the regular one. It is not the fourth leap month of anything. In a year with 闰四月 there are two fourth months, and when you convert a date you have to say which one you mean. Recent examples: 2020 had a leap fourth month, 2023 had a leap second month, and 2025 had a leap sixth month.
A worked example: where does lunar New Year land?
Chinese New Year is lunar 正月初一 — the first day of the first month. Because of the moon anchoring, it drifts inside a four-week Gregorian window, from as early as January 21 to as late as February 20.
Take the first day of the first month for 2026. Convert it and you get Gregorian 2026-02-17. Compare a few years side by side and the drift is obvious:
- 2023: January 22
- 2024: February 10
- 2025: January 29
- 2026: February 17
There is no pattern you can hold in your head — 2024 was nearly three weeks later than 2023, then 2025 jumped back. The only reliable way to pin it is to run the conversion. Finding a lunar birthday in any year
This is the problem that started my phone calls. If you only know a birthday as a lunar date — eighth month, fifteenth day, the Mid-Autumn full moon — a solar phone calendar is useless to you, because that lunar date moves every year.
The fix is the reverse direction: lunar to Gregorian. Pick the year you care about, then the lunar month and day. For grandmother's lunar 八月十五 in 2026, the converter returns 2026-09-26. Now I can book the dinner on the correct night instead of asking around within a two-week window. The same trick works for any recurring lunar observance — an anniversary, a memorial day, a temple festival.
Watch one subtle trap here: the zodiac animal does not change on January 1. It flips at Chinese New Year. Someone born on 2024-01-15 is still a Rabbit, not a Dragon, because Chinese New Year 2024 didn't arrive until February 10. The stem-branch year and animal are computed from the lunar date, not the Gregorian year on your passport. Festivals, solar terms, and counting the days between
Most major Chinese festivals are fixed to lunar dates, which is why they wander across the Gregorian calendar:
- Chinese New Year — 正月初一 (first month, first day)
- Lantern Festival — 正月十五 (first month, fifteenth day)
- Dragon Boat Festival — 五月初五 (fifth month, fifth day)
- Mid-Autumn Festival — 八月十五 (eighth month, fifteenth day)
A few observances are tied to the solar terms instead — Qingming (tomb-sweeping), for example, is fixed near April 4–5 because it is a solar term, not a lunar date. That mix is why a good converter reports both: the lunar date and, if your day happens to be one of the 24 solar terms, the term's name too.
Once you have two Gregorian dates pinned down, you often want the gap between them — how many days until New Year, or how long between two lunar observances after you've converted each. A note on time zones
The official Chinese calendar is computed for Beijing time (UTC+8). For nearly everyone this never matters — you enter a calendar date, you get a lunar date. The one edge case is a birth instant in a far-off time zone that falls very close to a lunar month boundary. If you were born just before midnight in New York near a new moon, convert that instant to Beijing time first; otherwise the lunar day can land one day off. The day boundary in the lunar calendar does not jump across the international date line — it is simply tied to Beijing's clock.
