The "due date" sounds like a deadline. It isn't. It's a single day picked out of a five-week landing window, and the math behind it is older than the stethoscope. Once you see how the number is built, the anxiety around it tends to ease — you stop reading the date as a promise and start reading it as the middle of a range.
This post walks through the actual arithmetic: where the 280 days come from, how a calendar date turns into "you're 14 weeks along," and why the exact due date is the one day your baby is statistically least likely to choose.
Naegele's rule: last period plus 280 days
The standard formula is more than two centuries old. A German obstetrician named Franz Naegele codified it in 1812, and clinics still use it today. The rule estimates the due date as the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP) plus 280 days — about 40 weeks. The classic shorthand is: take the LMP, add one year, subtract three months, add seven days. Do that and you land on the same day as the 280-day count.
Why count from the last period instead of from conception? Two reasons. First, most people know the first day of their last period to the day, while they only roughly know when they conceived. Second, dating from the LMP gives every pregnancy a shared starting line, so a "12-week" pregnancy means the same thing in every clinic on earth.
There's a quirk worth naming. The formula assumes a textbook 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14. So the 280-day clock starts running about two weeks before the egg is even fertilized. That's why "10 weeks pregnant" describes an embryo that is biologically closer to 8 weeks old. Gestational age and embryo age are not the same number, and the gap is roughly 14 days the whole way through.
If your cycle isn't 28 days, the estimate drifts. A 35-day cycle pushes ovulation later, so the true due date is about a week past what the plain 280-day count gives you. That's one of the main reasons a first-trimester ultrasound — which measures the fetus directly — is more accurate than any formula.
From a calendar date to a number of weeks
Gestational age is just elapsed time, expressed in completed weeks and days since the LMP. You take today's date, count the days since the first day of the last period, and divide by seven. The whole-number part is your weeks; the remainder is the extra days.
So if it's been 99 days since your LMP, that's 99 ÷ 7 = 14 weeks and 1 day. Clinicians write that as "14w1d." The trimesters are drawn on top of this count using the common ACOG lines: weeks 1–13 are the first trimester, weeks 14–27 the second, and week 28 onward the third. Full term begins at week 37.
This is exactly the kind of plodding date arithmetic that's easy to get wrong by hand, especially across month boundaries and leap years. A worked example
Let's run one all the way through. Say the first day of the last menstrual period was September 8, 2025.
Apply Naegele's rule: September 8 plus 280 days. Counting forward — 22 days left in September, then October (31), November (30), December (31), January (31), February (28), March (31), April (30), May (31) — brings us to mid-June. The estimated due date lands on June 15, 2026 (one year minus three months plus seven days from September 8, which is the same thing).
Now suppose today is the day you're reading this, June 13, 2026. How far along are you? Count the days from September 8, 2025 to June 13, 2026: that's 278 days. Divide by seven — 278 ÷ 7 = 39 weeks and 5 days. So you'd be 39w5d, deep in the third trimester, with the due date two days out. A baby arriving today would be considered full term with room to spare.
Change the LMP and every downstream number moves with it: the due date, the current week, the trimester, the countdown. That cascade is the whole job, and it's why doing it by hand invites slips.
Why so few babies land on the exact date
Here's the part that surprises people: only a small fraction of births land on the exact due date — somewhere in the neighborhood of one in twenty, roughly 4%. The due date is the single most likely individual day, but it's competing against a wide spread of other days, and most of them collectively win.
Births cluster in a window, not on a point. A full-term delivery is defined as anything from 37 weeks 0 days to 41 weeks 6 days — that's a five-week stretch where arrival is considered normal. First babies, in particular, tend to come a little later than the estimate. So the due date works like the peak of a bell curve: it's the high point, but the area under the rest of the curve dwarfs it. Picture a dartboard where the bullseye is the most likely single ring yet the dart almost always lands somewhere else on the board.
The estimate also carries built-in fuzz. The LMP method has about ±2 weeks of uncertainty baked in — late ovulation, an irregular cycle, or implantation bleeding mistaken for a period can all nudge the real timeline. A first-trimester scan tightens that to roughly ±5 days, which is why providers re-date the pregnancy if the scan and the LMP disagree by more than about a week.
My own brush with the math
When my sister was expecting, she texted me her due date like it was etched in stone and started planning a trip for "the week after." I did the LMP math on the back of an envelope and gently pointed out that her cycle ran long, so the real date was probably four or five days later than the app said — and even then, the odds of delivery on any one named day were tiny. She didn't love hearing it. Then her dating ultrasound moved the date by six days, almost exactly the direction I'd guessed, and the baby finally arrived eleven days after the original estimate. The trip got rebooked twice. Ever since, I treat the due date as a center of gravity, not a calendar appointment, and I tell anyone who asks to do the same.
A note on what this is — and isn't
