Every score on a single paper comes from the same small calculation. You know how many questions the test has, and you know how many the student got wrong (or, if you prefer, how many they got right). The percentage is:
percentage = correct ÷ total × 100
where correct = total − wrong. So a 50-question test with 5 wrong is (50 − 5) ÷ 50 × 100 = 90%. Nothing exotic — this is the same shop-floor arithmetic a paper grading wheel has run for decades, just instant and to as many decimal places as you want.
The reason a tool beats mental math is not that the formula is hard. It is that you are doing it 28 times with different mistake counts, and one slip turns an A paper into a B on the report sheet. Mapping the Percentage to a Letter

A Worked Example: 23 of 27 Correct
Here is the messy real number from my desk. The vocabulary test has 27 items. A student missed 4, so they got 23 right.
percentage = 23 ÷ 27 × 100 = 85.185…%
Rounded to one decimal, that is 85.2%. Drop it into the letter scale above — 85.2 falls in the 80-to-89 band — and the grade is a B. No fraction-to-decimal struggle, no second-guessing whether 85 lands in the right bucket. And because the chart already lists every count, I can see at a glance that 3 wrong would have been 88.9% (still a B, but close to an A), while 5 wrong drops to 81.5%. That neighbor view is what makes the chart worth printing.
Points-Based Grading vs Percentage Grading
There are two honest ways to grade, and the calculator handles both because they collapse into the same percentage.
Percentage grading is what we have been doing: every question is worth the same slice. On a 27-item test, each correct answer is worth 100 ÷ 27 ≈ 3.7 points, and the percentage is just the count of correct answers scaled to 100.
Points-based grading weights questions unequally — a short-answer item might be worth 5 points where a multiple-choice item is worth 1. Here you sum the points earned and divide by the points possible. The formula is identical in shape; you have simply replaced "count of questions" with "sum of point values." If a 40-point test earns 34 points, that is 34 ÷ 40 × 100 = 85%, a B again.

Sometimes the raw percentages come out lower than the class deserved — a question was ambiguous, or the test ran long. Curving adjusts every score by the same rule rather than re-marking papers. The two common moves:
- Flat bump. Add a fixed number of points to everyone. If the top paper scored 92% and you add 8, the class shifts up 8 points across the board.
- Top-score scaling. Treat the highest actual score as 100% and rescale the rest. If the best paper got 46 of 50, you divide every score by 0.92 so that 46 becomes the new ceiling.
A test grade calculator does not curve for you — curving is a judgment call about fairness, not arithmetic. But it gives you the clean raw percentages to curve from, and once you have decided on a bump, you re-read the chart with the new boundaries in mind. To be fair about scope: this grades one paper. If you try to fake a semester average by setting "total questions" to "number of assignments," you will ignore weights and produce a wrong report-card grade.
