What this tool does
Free guitar capo chord calculator. A capo clamps across a fret and raises every open string, so the chord that rings out is no longer the shape your fingers make. This tool does the math both directions. In sounding-pitch mode you type the shapes you finger plus the capo fret, and it tells you what the room actually hears: a C shape with the capo on fret 2 sounds a D, an Am shape sounds Bm. In easy-shape mode you type the chords you want to hear and the capo fret, and it hands back the open shapes to finger so they land on the target: to sound a D with a capo on fret 2 you play a C shape. The two modes are exact inverses because each fret is one semitone. Paste a whole line like C Am F G and the entire progression converts at once, with every suffix kept intact, so Dm7 stays a seventh and Esus4 stays a sus4, and a slash bass moves with the chord. One click copies the result and the shareable URL reopens the same chords, fret and mode. Everything runs in your browser. 100% client-side, nothing is uploaded.

Real-world use cases
Sing a song in your comfortable key
A worship leader hands you a chart in B that sits too high. Drop the chords into easy-shape mode, set the capo fret a few frets up, and read off the open shapes that land on the original key. Now you play shapes you actually know, the capo carries the pitch, and your voice lands in a range it can hold all the way through the bridge.
Turn brutal barre chords into open shapes
A song in E flat means Ab and Bb barre chords for four minutes straight. Put the progression in easy-shape mode, try a capo on fret 1 or 3, and the tool rewrites the whole line as friendly open shapes that still sound the original key. Your fretting hand stops cramping and the changes finally come out clean at tempo.
Match a recording you are playing along to
You found a tutorial that plays everything with a capo on fret 2 but calls out shapes, not the real chords. Use sounding-pitch mode to see that the C, G, Am, F shapes are actually D, A, Bm, G, so you know the real key and can jam with anyone who is not using a capo.
Write a lead sheet two musicians can both read
The guitarist wants shapes, the keyboardist wants concert chords. Convert once in sounding-pitch mode, copy the real-key line for the keys player, keep the shape line for the guitarist, and both pages agree on the same song. The shareable URL lets you send either version without re-typing a thing.
Common pitfalls
Adding the capo fret twice. The capo already raises everything, so if you transpose the chart up first AND clamp the capo, you overshoot by the fret count. Pick one move only, either transpose on paper, or capo and play the original shapes, never both.
Mixing up shape and sounding chord. The C shape under a capo on fret 2 is heard as D. Telling a non-capo player you are in C will make their chords clash. Use sounding-pitch mode to get the real key before you call it out to the band.
Choosing a capo fret that is too high. Past fret 7 or 8 the strings get short and the tone turns thin and brittle. If the math says fret 9, look for a lower fret with a different open shape that reaches the same sounding key instead.
Privacy
Every calculation here is plain JavaScript running inside your browser tab. The chords you type, the capo fret and the chosen mode never leave the page, and nothing is logged or uploaded. The one thing to know: the shareable URL encodes your chords, fret and mode in the query string, so a link you paste into chat will record those chords in the recipient server access log. That is harmless for a public song, but if you would rather not, use the copy button and paste the text instead of the link.
