What this tool does

Free Chinese zodiac calculator. Enter your birthday and we tell you your animal sign (生肖 — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig), the 60-year stem-branch year (干支 — 甲子, 乙丑, 丙寅 …), your associated Wu Xing element (金 metal / 木 wood / 水 water / 火 fire / 土 earth), which signs you are compatible with (san he 三合 and liu he 六合 — the classical affinity groups), which signs clash with you (六冲), your next ten ben ming nian (本命年 — the recurring year of your sign, when tradition says you should wear red), plus lucky numbers, colors and compass directions. We use the folk-convention cutoff (Chinese New Year, lunar 正月初一) so if you were born in January or early February, you get the previous year's animal — exactly the way grandma would tell it. 100% client-side, no network, no tracking.

Real-world use cases

  • A coworker asks your sign and you were born in late January

Your passport says February 1996, so for years you told people you were born in the year of the Rat. Drop 1996-02-01 in here and it says Pig: Chinese New Year 1996 fell on Feb 19, and you arrived 18 days early. Now you can answer "I'm a Pig" without the awkward back-and-forth, and you understand why your grandmother always said so.

  • Planning a wedding date and the in-laws care about 相冲

The groom is a Rabbit (1999), the bride a Rooster (1993). Enter both birthdays and you'll see Rabbit clashes with Rooster (卯酉相冲) in the classical six-clash table. That doesn't mean the marriage is doomed, but it tells you exactly which traditional objection a older relative might raise, so you can have the conversation prepared instead of being blindsided at the dinner table.

  • Buying red for someone hitting their ben ming nian

Your dad turns 60 next lunar year and you want a thoughtful gift. Enter his 1965 birthday and the tool lists his next ben ming nian and confirms 2025 (Snake year) is one of them. Tradition says an elder's red items should be gifted by the younger generation, so you buy him a red belt and red socks ahead of New Year and you know you've got the timing right.

  • Writing a culture lesson and you need the stem-branch year

You're a teacher building a slide on the 60-year cycle. Type 1984 and you get Wood Rat (甲子), the exact start of a new sexagenary cycle. Try 2044 and it's Wood Rat again, 60 years later. Now your students see why "甲子" means a full lifetime, and you have three real example years (1924, 1984, 2044) instead of hand-waving.

Common pitfalls

  • Reading your sign straight off the Gregorian year. Born 2024-01-15 you'd say Dragon, but CNY 2024 was Feb 10, so you're actually a Rabbit. Always check the New Year cutoff for Jan and early-Feb birthdays.

  • Confusing the bazi 立春 (Lichun, ~Feb 4) cutoff with the folk New Year cutoff. They give different signs for some early-February births. This tool uses the New Year convention; only switch to 立春 if you're specifically doing bazi fortune-telling.

  • Treating a 相冲 clash as a verdict. The classical clash (e.g. Rat vs Horse) is folklore, not a relationship test. Use it to understand what older relatives mean, not to call off a match.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. Your birthday is used only to compute the result on this page and is never sent to a server, logged, or used for tracking. The date does not go into the URL, so a shared link does not expose anyone's birthday.
