English Vocabulary Test
50 questions, ~5 minutes. Each question shows one English word and 4 Chinese meanings — pick the right one. Difficulty adapts: get it right and the next word is harder; get it wrong and the next is easier. We estimate your vocabulary size and level (CET-4 / CET-6 / IELTS / TOEFL / GRE) at the end.
Tip: when you don't know a word, eliminate the obviously-wrong options first instead of guessing all four at random.
What this tool does
Free adaptive English vocabulary test for Chinese learners. 50 questions, about 5 minutes — each shows one English word and 4 Chinese meanings, pick the right one. The difficulty adapts in real time: get a word right and the next jumps a tier (CET-4 → CET-6 → IELTS → TOEFL → GRE); miss it and the next drops back down. By the end we estimate your total vocabulary size (e.g. "8 200 words") and map it to a recognizable level: junior-high literacy, gaokao, CET-4, CET-6, IELTS 6 / 7, TOEFL 80 / 100, or GRE.
The 1 000-word bank is real — 200 hand-vetted entries per level pulled from the public CET-4 / CET-6 syllabus, Cambridge IELTS frequency lists, ETS TOEFL Official Guide, and the canonical GRE high-frequency list. No LLM-fabricated words, no fake meanings. Chinese glosses are cross-checked against the 现代汉英词典 main entry. The wrong-answer review at the end shows every word you missed plus its correct meaning, so you walk away with a study list, not just a number. 100% client-side: nothing is sent to any server, no signup, no install. Take it as many times as you want.

Real-world use cases
Pick the right exam prep book before you waste 200 yuan
You're deciding between a CET-6 word book and an IELTS 7 list but have no idea which one matches where you actually are. Run the test, land on "7 100 words, CET-6 level, IELTS 5.5-6 range", and you know the IELTS book is one tier ahead, not two. Buy the CET-6 consolidation set first, save the IELTS book for month two.
Set a measurable goal for a 3-month study sprint
A junior at 5 400 words wants TOEFL 90 by August. The test pegs TOEFL 80-100 at roughly 8 000-10 000 words, so the gap is about 3 000 words, or 33 new words a day across 90 days. Now the plan is a number, not a vibe. Re-test every two weeks and watch the estimate climb past 6 000, 7 000, 8 000 so you know the daily drill is actually sticking.
Turn the wrong-answer list into tonight's Anki deck
You finish with 8 200 words but miss 6 GRE-tier words like "perspicacious" and "obfuscate". Instead of guessing what to study, you copy the 6 missed words and their correct Chinese meanings straight off the result page into Anki. Five minutes of test, a ready-made 6-card deck, and you drill exactly the words at your frontier instead of re-reviewing words you already own.
Settle a "whose English is better" bet with a classmate
Two classmates both claim CET-6 level. Each runs the same test on their own phone in 4 minutes, screenshots the result, and compares: 7 600 vs 6 900 words. The 700-word gap is inside the ±800 margin, so honestly it's a tie, and now you both know to push past 8 000 before either of you can brag. Cheaper than arguing, and you each walk away with a study list.
Common pitfalls
Reading the first 8-10 easy words as "this test is too basic" and quitting. Those are calibration questions, the difficulty climbs only after you chain 3-4 corrects, so finish all 50 before judging.
Treating a single run as gospel. The estimate carries about ±800 words of noise, so a 7 600 today and 7 100 next week is the same score, not a regression. Average three runs for a tighter number.
Guessing on words you half-know to inflate the score. A lucky guess credits you for a whole tier you don't own, which then misdirects your study plan, so pick "I don't know" honestly when you're unsure.
Privacy
This test runs 100% in your browser. The words you see, the answers you pick, and your final vocabulary estimate never leave your device and are not sent to any server. Nothing is written to localStorage by design, so closing the tab clears everything and no score is remembered between visits. The result is not put into the URL either, so there's no shareable link that leaks your number, screenshot the result page if you want to keep it.
