How to play
  • Arrow keys (or WASD) on desktop; swipe on phone.
  • All tiles slide together in the direction you chose, as far as they can.
  • Two equal tiles colliding merge into one tile with the sum — but each tile can only merge once per move.
  • After every move that changes the board, one new tile spawns: 2 (90%) or 4 (10%).
  • Aim for 2048. Game over when no move can change the board.

Best score lives only in your browser (localStorage). No account, no cloud sync, no ads.

What this tool does

The classic 2048 sliding-tile puzzle, in your browser, with no ads, no signup, no "play more games" interstitials, and no download. Use arrow keys on desktop or swipe on a phone to slide every tile in a single direction — when two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with the sum. Hit 2048 to win. Keep going past 2048 if you want to chase 4096, 8192, or the legendary 16384 (the community record on a 4×4 board is 65536, but you'll need a few hours and steel nerves). Three board sizes: 3×3 for new players and quick rounds, 4×4 classic for the canonical Gabriele Cirulli original from 2014, and 5×5 hard mode for when the standard board starts feeling tight. One-step undo is built in (one undo per move so you can rescue a bad swipe without rewriting history). Your current score, best score per board size, and the move-count counter all live in your browser only via localStorage — no account ever, nothing leaves your device. Tested on every modern browser including mobile Safari and Chrome on Android. Bundle is 18 KB — it loads faster than most 2048 sites finish loading their ad networks.

Real-world use cases

  • Teach a 7-year-old place value during a 15-minute car ride

Switch to the 3x3 board and hand a kid your phone. On 3x3 they hit 128 or 256 in under two minutes, so they see "two 64s make a 128" happen six or seven times per game instead of waiting ten minutes on the 4x4. The merge-into-sum rule is a hands-on demo of doubling: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. No ads means no surprise video they have to sit through, and nothing gets saved to an account.

  • Settle a 2048 strategy argument by replaying the same bad move

Two people argue whether you should have swiped up or left at a stuck board. Make the move, see it fail, hit undo once, try the other direction. The single-step undo lets you A/B exactly one decision without restarting a 400-move game. Best score per board size is tracked separately, so testing theories on 4x4 never overwrites the 5x5 record you spent an hour building.

  • Kill a five-minute meeting-join wait without an app install

You are early to a call and have four minutes. Open the page on 4x4, it loads in 18 KB before a normal 2048 site finishes its ad handshake, and your previous best is already there from localStorage. You play one round, close the tab when the host arrives, and reopen later to find your score intact. No download, no signup, no "rate us" popup eating the last 30 seconds.

  • Grind for a personal record on the 5x5 hard board

You have already beaten 4x4 and 2048 feels routine. 5x5 gives you 25 cells instead of 16, so you can build a long monotonic chain (2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64) down one edge and push for 8192 or 16384. Games run 600 to 1000 moves, the move counter tracks your run, and the 5x5 best score saves on its own key so a quick 3x3 round never clobbers the record you are chasing.

Common pitfalls

  • Spamming all four directions hoping a big tile appears. Pick a home corner (say bottom-left), keep your largest tile pinned there, and mostly alternate left and down so it never wanders.

  • Expecting a row of 2-2-2-2 to merge into one 8. A single swipe gives you 4-4, because each tile merges only once per move. Swipe again to turn 4-4 into 8.

  • Treating the one-step undo as a safety net for sloppy play. It only rescues the last move, then greys out. Plan each swipe as if there is no undo, and keep undo for genuine thumb slips.

Privacy

Everything stays in your browser. The game runs 100% client-side, so no board state, score, or move ever leaves your device or hits a server. Best scores live in localStorage under `toolora.game2048.best.v1`, keyed by board size, and the URL never carries your game state, so a shared link only opens a fresh board, it does not leak your record. Clearing site data or playing in incognito wipes the saved scores by design.
