What this tool does

The honest minimum-viable Japanese vocabulary, now expanded to 500 words covering the full JLPT N5 plus N4 high-frequency core. Every entry is pulled from the public JLPT N5 / N4 official lists, the Tanaka Corpus, and the Genki I + II beginner textbooks — not invented by an LLM. The 500 are split across 16 categories: greetings, numbers (1 through 10000 with counters), time, family, food, animals, verbs (with the full 5-form conjugation table for every single one: masu / ta / te / nai / dictionary), i-adjectives and na-adjectives, grammatical particles, colors, body parts, weather, transport, daily objects, emotions, and places.

Every card shows: the word in hiragana or katakana, romaji in modified Hepburn, the kanji if any, Chinese and English meanings, the part of speech with verb class (godan / ichidan / irregular), an example sentence in Japanese with bilingual translation, and for every verb the full five-form conjugation table including the famous exceptions (来る has three different stems, 行く's te-form is いって, ある negates to ない). A Play button calls your browser's built-in Japanese voice (Web Speech API, ja-JP, no external API, no signup). Filter by category or search by kana, romaji, kanji, English, or Chinese. Star words to build a personal study list (saved in localStorage).

Why 500 and not 5 000? Because 500 well-learned words is the JLPT N5+N4 threshold — the line between "I can buy a train ticket in Shinjuku" and "I can chat with a Japanese coworker over lunch." N5 needs about 100 core words, N4 adds 400, and together they unlock 80% of everyday conversation. After 500, pair this with NHK Easy News and Comprehensible Japanese on YouTube and the next thousand words will absorb themselves.

How Japanese 500 Essential Words (JLPT N5 + N4) fits into your work

Use it to clean, compare, reshape, or extract plain text before it goes into a document, CMS, spreadsheet, or prompt.

Text jobs

  • Removing repetitive cleanup work from everyday writing and operations.
  • Making text easier to compare, paste, publish, or feed into another tool.
  • Working with content locally when the text is private or unfinished.

Text checks

  • Scan for unintended whitespace, duplicate lines, and lost punctuation.
  • For long text, test the first few lines before applying the whole change.
  • Copy the final output only after checking the preview.

Real-world use cases

  • Lock the 95 verbs before a JLPT N5 mock exam

The grammar section of N5 lives or dies on conjugation. Filter to the verbs category, hide the romaji, and for each of the 95 verbs say all five forms out loud before tapping Play to check. The card tells you godan vs ichidan, so when you hit 行く you remember its te-form is いって, not the regular いいて. Twenty minutes a day for a week and the conjugation questions stop being guesswork.

  • Drill the eight particles that wreck beginner sentences

Filter to the particle category and read each example sentence aloud. The cards flag the three pronunciation traps directly: は read as wa, を read as o, へ read as e. Star は, が, を, に so they surface in your review list, then write five of your own sentences swapping particles to feel how 私が食べる and 私を食べる mean completely different things.

  • Build a 30-word survival deck before a Tokyo trip

You leave in two weeks and want the words that get you through a train station and a restaurant. Search すみません, いくら, みず, えき, then star them plus the numbers 1 through 10000 with counters. Your starred list (saved in localStorage) becomes a 30-card deck you replay on the plane with the Play button, hearing the ja-JP voice instead of guessing romaji.

  • Pre-teach a beginner class with audio they can mimic

A teacher prepping a first-year lesson on food can filter to the food category, project the cards, and hit Play so all 30 students hear the same Tokyo-standard pronunciation at once. Because every card carries kana, romaji, kanji, and a bilingual example sentence, you skip making slides: たべる shows the masu/ta/te/nai/dictionary table right there, so the conjugation drill is built into the same screen.

Common pitfalls

  • Treating every verb as regular. 行く looks godan but its te-form is いって; the card's godan/ichidan tag plus the exception note saves you from saying いいて.

  • Reading particles by their spelling. は in a sentence is wa, を is o, へ is e; read the example sentence aloud, not the kana in isolation.

  • Studying with romaji as a crutch. Hide the romaji once a word is familiar and recall from kana, or you will freeze the moment a real menu has no Latin letters.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. The 500-word list ships with the page, the Play button uses your operating system's built-in voice through the Web Speech API with no audio sent anywhere, and your starred study list lives in localStorage on this device only. Searches and category filters never leave the tab and are not written into the URL, so nothing about what you study is logged or shared.
