How much should I tip in the US?

At a sit-down restaurant the conventional range is 15–20% on the pre-tax subtotal. 18% is the modern default. At a counter, coffee shop, or to-go pickup, 10% (or rounding up) is fine. Rideshare drivers typically get 10–15%. Buffets are usually 10%. If service was bad, 10% with a quiet word to the manager is more honest than zero.

Do I tip on the tax or the pre-tax amount?

The strict convention is pre-tax. This calculator follows that — enter your pre-tax subtotal in "Bill" and your tax separately in "Tax". If you only have the tax-inclusive total handy, put it in "Bill" and leave "Tax" at zero; the tip will be a couple of dollars higher, which most servers consider a perfectly nice rounding-up gesture rather than an error.

How does AA mode actually split the tip?

Proportional to what each person ordered. If Alex ate $20 and Sam ate $40 with a 20% tip ($12), Alex pays his $20 + (20/60)*$12 = $24, and Sam pays $40 + (40/60)*$12 = $48. That's fairer than splitting the tip evenly (which would punish Alex for ordering cheap) and far easier than recomputing per item.

What does "round up" do?

It rounds each person's share UP to the next whole currency unit. Useful when the math says "$13.27 each" and three of you are paying — bumping it to $14 each means the person who fronted the bill gets back a small buffer instead of asking everyone to dig for coins. The original exact share is still shown next to it.

Why doesn't this support every world currency?

The six built-in currencies (USD / CNY / EUR / GBP / JPY / HKD) cover most users by traffic. The math is currency-agnostic — entering 500 in any currency works identically. We deliberately do NOT convert between currencies live because that would require a network call to a rate API, and we promise the tool stays fully offline. Where is my data stored?

Only in your own browser's localStorage, under the key `toolora_tip_history`. The last 10 calculations are saved so you can re-use them. Nothing is sent to any server, no analytics is attached to your amounts. If you clear browser site data, the history is wiped — there is no recovery, because there is no copy anywhere else.

Why is China set to 0% tip by default?

Tipping is not part of dining culture in mainland China — restaurants don't expect it, and many will hand the money back if you try. What people DO need is to figure out who owes what when one person paid for the group, which is why the same tool ships an AA mode with no tip. Hong Kong is the exception — most sit-down restaurants there add a 10% service charge automatically.

Common pitfalls

Tipping on the tax-inclusive total instead of the pre-tax subtotal. On a $200 meal with $16 tax, 20% on $216 is $43.20 vs $40 on the subtotal. Put the subtotal in "Bill" and tax in "Tax".
Using even-split when orders are wildly different. If one person had $9 and another had $50, even-split tipping overcharges the cheap eater. Flip to AA mode so tip follows what each person ordered.
Forgetting Hong Kong and many European bills already add 10-15% service charge. Tipping another 20% on top double-pays. Check the printed bill first, then set tip to 0% if service is included.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. Your bill amounts, tip percentages, and per-person orders are never sent to any server. The last 10 calculations are kept only in your own localStorage under the key toolora_tip_history, purely so you can re-use them. Nothing about your spending is written into the URL, so a shared link never leaks how much you paid. Clear your browser site data and the history is gone for good, because no copy exists anywhere else.
