What this tool does

Free online tip calculator + AA bill splitter, 100% client-side. Pick the tip percentage (10 / 15 / 18 / 20 / 25 or custom), enter the bill, set the number of people, and get the tip, total, and each person's share instantly. Two modes: simple (one bill, split evenly) and AA (each person ordered something different — tip is allocated proportionally to what they ate). Add optional tax. Toggle round-up so no one fights over coins. Switch between USD / CNY / EUR / GBP / JPY / HKD. A top hint walks through tipping customs around the world — US 15–20%, Europe usually includes service charge, Japan don't tip, China mostly used for AA. Last 10 calculations are saved in your browser's localStorage; nothing is uploaded.

Real-world use cases

  • Splitting a $214 dinner four ways after one person paid

You and three friends ate out, the bill came to $214 before tax, and you put it all on one card. Set tip to 18% ($38.52), people to 4, and each share lands at $63.13. Turn on round-up and it becomes $64 a head, so the three friends Venmo you a clean number and you keep the small float instead of chasing 13-cent transfers.

  • An AA dinner where one person only had a salad

Six of you go out, but Maya only ordered a $9 salad while everyone else had steaks. Even-split tipping would charge her the same as a $45 plate. Switch to AA mode, enter each person's order, and the 20% tip is spread by what they actually ate, so Maya pays tip on her $9, not on the table's average. Nobody has to do the awkward "I'll just throw in $20" math.

  • Tipping a rideshare and a coffee on the same morning

Quick everyday checks: a $23 airport ride deserves roughly 10-15%, so you tap 15% and see $3.45, round up to $4. Later a $6 latte counter asks for a tip on the screen and you decide 10% ($0.60) or just round to $7. The calculator keeps both in your last-10 history so you can glance back at what you actually gave that week.

  • Travelling abroad and not over-tipping by habit

You land in Tokyo, eat a $40 ramen dinner, and your US reflex says add 20%. The top hint reminds you Japan does not tip, so you switch the currency to JPY, set tip to 0%, and pay the exact bill. Same trip, a Hong Kong dinner already has a 10% service charge printed, so you leave tip at 0 there too instead of double-paying.

Common pitfalls

  • Tipping on the tax-inclusive total instead of the pre-tax subtotal. On a $200 meal with $16 tax, 20% on $216 is $43.20 vs $40 on the subtotal. Put the subtotal in "Bill" and tax in "Tax".

  • Using even-split when orders are wildly different. If one person had $9 and another had $50, even-split tipping overcharges the cheap eater. Flip to AA mode so tip follows what each person ordered.

  • Forgetting Hong Kong and many European bills already add 10-15% service charge. Tipping another 20% on top double-pays. Check the printed bill first, then set tip to 0% if service is included.

Privacy

Everything runs in your browser. Your bill amounts, tip percentages, and per-person orders are never sent to any server. The last 10 calculations are kept only in your own localStorage under the key toolora_tip_history, purely so you can re-use them. Nothing about your spending is written into the URL, so a shared link never leaks how much you paid. Clear your browser site data and the history is gone for good, because no copy exists anywhere else.
