Bopomofo (ㄅㄆㄇㄈ) is the phonetic system taught in Taiwan. Tone 1 is unmarked, 2 = ˊ, 3 = ˇ, 4 = ˋ, neutral = ˙.

What this tool does

A free two-way converter between Hanyu Pinyin and Zhuyin Fuhao (Bopomofo, the ㄅㄆㄇㄈ phonetic system still taught in Taiwan). Type a toned syllable as numbered pinyin like zhong1 or as accented pinyin like zhōng and it becomes ㄓㄨㄥ with the matching tone mark. Flip the direction and ㄓㄨㄥ goes back to zhong. The tool carries a complete built-in table of initials (b becomes ㄅ, zh becomes ㄓ), finals (a becomes ㄚ, ang becomes ㄤ, ong becomes ㄨㄥ), the whole syllable buzz finals where zhi maps to a bare ㄓ rather than ㄓㄧ, and the four tones plus the neutral tone (1 unmarked, 2 ˊ, 3 ˇ, 4 ˋ, neutral ˙). Paste a whole sentence of space separated syllables and every token converts at once, then copy the result with one click. Everything happens client side, nothing you type leaves the page, and the share link reopens with your exact input and direction.

Real-world use cases

  • Read a Taiwanese dictionary or children's book

Most learning material printed in Taiwan annotates characters with Zhuyin rather than pinyin. If you grew up on pinyin, a page of ㄅㄆㄇㄈ looks like a wall. Paste the pinyin you already know, flip to pinyin mode, and build the Zhuyin equivalents so the annotations on the page suddenly make sense. Going the other way, copy the ㄓㄨㄥ ㄨㄣˊ above a word you cannot read and the tool hands you zhong wen2, which you can then look up anywhere.

  • Teach a class that mixes pinyin and Zhuyin students

A Mandarin classroom with both mainland and Taiwan trained learners often needs the same word in two notations on one slide. Type each vocabulary syllable once in pinyin, convert, and paste both forms side by side. Share the URL with the class so every student opens the exact word list you prepared, in whichever script they read.

  • Set up a Bopomofo keyboard and check your spelling

New to the Zhuyin keyboard layout in Taiwan? When you are unsure which keys spell a syllable, convert the pinyin you know into ㄅㄆㄇㄈ and read off the symbols in order. Seeing that xue2 is ㄒㄩㄝˊ tells you to press ㄒ, then ㄩ, then ㄝ, then the second tone, which is exactly how the input method expects the sequence.

  • Caption a video or build a karaoke sing along line

Subtitling Mandarin content for a Taiwan audience usually means Zhuyin pronunciation guides over the lyrics. Drop the romanized line in, convert the whole row at once, and the spacing stays one token per syllable so your caption tool lines each symbol cluster up with the right character without manual fiddling.

Common pitfalls

  • Forgetting the tone. Pinyin without a tone digit or accent defaults to the first tone, so ma quietly becomes ㄇㄚ rather than the ㄇㄚˇ you may have meant. Always supply a tone, either as a trailing digit (ma3) or an accent (mǎ), so the converter knows which mark to attach.

  • Expecting zhi to gain a vowel symbol. The i in zhi, chi, shi, ri, zi, ci and si is not the ㄧ sound, so the correct Zhuyin is the bare consonant ㄓ ㄔ ㄕ ㄖ ㄗ ㄘ ㄙ. Seeing a single symbol come back is right, not a bug.

  • Writing the ü vowel as a plain u everywhere. After j, q and x the letter u already means ü, so ju is ㄐㄩ. But after l and n the difference is real, lu is ㄌㄨ while lü is ㄌㄩ, so type lv or lü when you mean the ü sound to avoid the wrong rhyme.

Privacy

The whole conversion is plain JavaScript running in your browser tab. The mapping tables for initials, finals and tones ship with the page, so nothing you type, neither the pinyin nor the Zhuyin, is ever sent to a server, and there is no logging of what you converted. One thing to know: the share link encodes your input text and the conversion direction in the URL query string, so a link pasted into a chat records that text in the recipient server access log. For anything private, use the copy button and paste the result instead of sharing the URL.
